Tornadoes Use a Different Pitcher Each Inning in 12-3 Loss

Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Rockland Boulders scored four times in the first inning and never gave up their lead in a 12-3 win over the Worcester Tornadoes at Provident Bank Park on Friday night. The Tornadoes used a different pitcher in every single inning, starting with the professional debut of Walker McKinven.

McKinven allowed the four runs (all earned) on three walks and four hits in his inning of work. The Boulders had the minimum amount of hitters in an inning to score four and have the bases loaded. McKinven struck out two hitters, including his first ever batter faced Chris Valencia. The Boulders' center fielder went down swinging after watching three balls go by to start his at-bat.

Mike Mullen pitched a perfect inning with a pair of strikeouts. He was one of only two Worcester pitchers to retire the Rockland batters in order.

In the third, Rockland struck Sean Keeler for a pair of runs on two hits and a walk. Ryan Scoma, Ryan Mollica and Cole Kraft all reached in each of their first two plate appearances, with Scoma and Mollica accounting for the Boulders' runs in the third.

Chris Torres hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to give the Tornadoes their first run and Alex Nunez followed with a broken bat single on the next pitch, but Worcester didn't score again against the Boulders' starter Jon Velasquez.

Kyle Regnault gave up a run in his inning (the fourth), when Scoma had an RBI single to score Keith Brachold (who alternated between singles and runs scored with strikeouts in his five trips to the plate).

Matt McDonald induced the first of two inning-ending double plays on the night, the fourth and fifth of the series for the pitching staff. He tossed a goose egg up in the runs allowed department after giving up a lead-off single. He started the 1-6-3 twin-killing himself.

Nick Serino had the second and last 1-2-3 inning for the Tornadoes pitching corps, k'ing two Rockland batters.

Worcester added another pair of runs on a Cameron Monger walk before Jerod Edmondson's 11th homer of the season off of his former teammate with the Pittsfield Colonials, Chris Rubio. Rubio gave up a homer to Chris Torres, another former teammate of his in a previous game this season.

Tony Patane came in from second base to toss the seventh inning, escaping a one-walk, one-hit jam with a 5-4-3 double play off of the bat of Billy Alvino.

Cam Kneeland was the eighth and final pitcher for Worcester, allowing five runs (four earned) in the eighth inning. He gave up five hits and struck out a batter to start a streak of three hitters retired in a row (ending his outing).

Velasquez pitched six innings for the victory, improving to (4-4) on the season. Dan Jurik and Garrett Johnson combined for two innings of shutout relief, striking out three batters and allowing two hits.

Dan Sausville will get the nod in Saturday night's contest, a 7:05pm start against the Boulders. All of the action will be live on USTREAM.tv.
