WORCESTER, MA - (August 23, 2009) - The Worcester Tornadoes plated four runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie, and continued on for the 5-1 victory over the Brockton Rox on Sunday afternoon at Hanover Insurance Park.

Rox starting pitcher RHP John Kelly, making his first start since June 19th, pitched the first four innings of the game, allowing just one run on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Kelly was working on a pitch count and was relieved by LHP Brad Hertzler.

Brockton's lone run was scored in the fourth inning on a solo home run by RF Keith Brachold; his ninth of the year. Worcester starter LHP Zach Zuercher was fantastic, surrendering just the one run on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk over eight full innings. Zuercher improved his record to 7-4.

In the eighth inning, the Tornadoes scored four runs on four hits including an RBI single by 3B Mike MacMillan and a two-run single from 2B Jeff LaHair. The first two runs were charged to Hertzler who pitched 3.1 innings in relief of Kelly. RHP Keith Noe recorded the final two outs of the inning, but also allowed two runs on two hits. Hertzler was saddled with his third loss of the season.

CF Chris Valencia was able to extend his on-base streak to 20 games, going 2-for-3 with two singles. C Jon Gossard also had a two-hit day with a single and a double.

The Rox magic number to clinch a playoff spot has been lowered to three due to New Hampshire's loss to Quebec on Sunday afternoon. Brockton has 14 games remaining on the regular-season schedule.

Brockton continues its seven-game road trip with the first of four games with the Quebec Capitales on Monday night at Le Stade Municipal. RHP Freddy Flores (5-3, 3.66 ERA) will take the ball for the Rox in a game scheduled to start at 7:05 PM.
