Sussex Takes Two From New Jersey

AUGUSTA, N.J. - It took Sussex a bit longer than usual, but it ended up taking two games from New Jersey on Sunday afternoon at Skylands Park. After rain halted play on Saturday in the bottom of the fourth inning, Sussex held onto its lead over the final five innings to top the Jackals 5-3. The Skyhawks then used a four run-first inning to cruise to a 7-3 win in the seven inning-second game.

GAME 1 (continued from Saturday) - SUSSEX 5 NEW JERSEY 3 (9 innings)

Sussex led 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth when the rains came on Saturday night, and extended its lead to 5-1 when play resumed on Sunday. The Skyhawks went on to beat New Jersey 5-3, behind outstanding pitching.

Mike Schellinger started the game on Saturday and threw the first four innings, limiting New Jersey to one run on six hits. However, Schellinger had to turn the game over to Sandy Nin on Sunday. Nin pitched four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits, to earn the win. Greg Lane pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first save.

Ryan Crespi's RBI-triple put the Skyhawks on the board in the bottom of the third. Crespi ended up scoring on the play on a New Jersey Jackals throwing error, which gave Sussex a 2-0 advantage. Sussex added two more in the fifth when Jorge Moreno drove in Crespi with a triple.

GAME 2 - SUSSEX 7 NEW JERSEY 3 (7 innings)

Sussex's first four batters of the game came around to score, giving the Skyhawks an early 4-0 lead and allowing them to cruise to a 7-3 win in the second game at Skylands Park.

Kyle Ruwe went five innings, giving up three runs on four hits, to earn the win. Ruwe walked four and struck out four. Giuseppe Granitto took the loss after giving up seven runs on seven hits in four innings. Granitto walked five and struck out two.

Maikel Jova went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs cored for Sussex.

New Jersey and Sussex return to Skylands Park on Sunday for a 2:05 p.m. game.
