Tornadoes Split Doubleheader with Jackals

July 26, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Tornadoes have not lost game one of a doubleheader this season, but they haven't won game two either. Worcester continued that trend with a 3-2 victory before an 11-8 defeat at the HIP on Tuesday night.

Zach Zuercher picked up the win in game one, going six strong innings (eight strikeouts, one walk, four hits and two runs [both earned]). RIck Asadoorian picked up the save when pinch runner and the potential tying-run Chris White was caught trying to steal second.

In game one, the Tornadoes scored all three runs in the first. Alex Nunez-- in his first game back after being hit by a pitch two weeks ago to the day, against the Jackals-- came home on Mark Minicozzi's RBI single. Abraham Nunez scored when Nick Salotti plated his league-leading 60th RBI. Minicozzi crossed the plate on Brendon Kelliher's sacrifice fly, and that was all Zuercher & Co. needed.

The loss went to John Kibler, who pitched a complete game. His six innings of three-run ball weren't enough, as the Jackals lost game one of a doubleheader for the third time in as many happenings during the 2011 campaign. New Jersey has not lost a game two, and Tuesday's was no different.

The Jackals plated five runs in the first two innings, all with two outs (as were their first seven hits). Worcester answered with a run in the bottom half of the second, when Minicozzi scored on a double play that Salotti hit into. The Tornadoes scored six more runs before the Jackals struck again...

In the bottom of the fourth, Alex Trezza hit a solo homer to cut the deficit to 5-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Worcester scored five runs to take its first (and only) lead, which didn't last through the next half-frame.

Cameron Monger, Ryan Crespi, Alex Nunez, Abraham Nunez and Chris Colabello all scored in a 10-batter fifth. Abraham scored the go-ahead run, and the Tornadoes had a 7-5 lead through five.

New Jersey added a couple of runs in the next half inning to tie it, thanks to Argenis Reyes' single. After Worcester was held scoreless in its half of the sixth, the Jackals scored another four runs.

Kris Sanchez hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to put the Jackals up for good, and they tacked on a couple of insurance runs later in the frame.

Sean Gregory, who gave up the Sanchez homer, got the loss, while Mike Moore picked up the victory.

Colabello hit a solo homer leading off the ninth to plate the game's last run.

Game three of the four game series is Wednesday night at 7:05pm. Shawn Gilblair will get the start for the Tornadoes. The gates open at 6:00, and Tornadoes Pre-Game Live begins on USTREAM at 6:50.
