Can-Am League Game Recaps

Published on July 26, 2011 under Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

Newark 6, New York 1 (Game 1 - 7 innings)

It didn't take long for Newark to go ahead in Tuesday's Game 1. Just two batters into the bottom of the first, Bears SS Juan Martinez homered, setting the stage for a three-run inning. The Bears led the rest of the way - their advantage never shrinking below two runs - en route to a 6-1 win. Martinez went 3-for-4 on the evening with his solo shot responsible for his lone run and RBI. Starting Bears pitcher Jesse Estrada threw the first six innings, striking out six Federals batters and allowing one run on seven hits with no walks. Federals leadoff SS Tucker Nathans was responsible for three of New York's eight hits, going 3-for-3, and batted in the club's only run in the game. Nathans also stole a base.

Newark 7, New York 6 (Game 2 - 7 innings)

A six-run Newark sixth was nearly squandered Tuesday. After the Bears turned a 2-1 deficit into a 7-2 lead, the Newark defense committed two errors and allowed the tying run into scoring position with two outs. That's when Newark reliever Mikey Mehlich removed any doubt, striking out New York LF Derrick Pyles to end the game with his team clinging to a 7-6 win. Mehlich allowed four runs - all unearned - in one inning of work, striking out three and allowing two doubles. Five of the Bears' six sixth-inning runs came with two outs on the board, the final two on 3B Juan Martinez' only hit of the night, a two-out double. Bears RF Danny Santiesteban had a big night offensively, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Worcester 3, New Jersey 2 (Game 1 - 7 innings)

The Tornadoes scored three first-inning runs, and the Worcester pitching staff did just enough over their seven frames of work to give the home team a 3-2 win against New Jersey. Starting Tornadoes pitcher Zach Zuercher struck out eight Jackals batters and allowed two runs on four hits and a walk before Rick Asadoorian took over to close out New Jersey in the seventh. The win was Zuercher's eighth of the year. Tornadoes DH Mark Minicozzi batted in his team's first run on his only hit of the night, later scoring on a Brendan Kelliher sacrifice fly that brought Worcester's advantage to 3-0. All of Minicozzi's offensive output came in that opening frame, as the 6-foot-2 Pennsylvania native went 1-for-3 with a hit and an RBI.

New Jersey 11, Worcester 8 (Game 2 - 7 innings)

Momentum swung heavily in New Jersey's 11-8 victory over Worcester in Game 2 of their doubleheader Tuesday. The Jackals led 5-0 before seven straight Tornadoes runs gave the home club a two-run lead. But the comeback was for naught, as a four-run Worcester seventh put the Jackals on top for good. New Jersey SS Mike DeJesus led all batters in hits, going 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Worcester 3B Chris Colabello opened the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot that threatened to swing the pendulum back in the Tornadoes' favor. But a walk, strikeout and double play later, New Jersey had its victory.
