New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, N.J. - On Saturday, July 30, the New Jersey Jackals will retire Zach Smithlin's number in a ceremony prior to their contest against the Pittsfield Colonials. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m. The Jackals' Fireworks Spectacular will follow the game.

Smithlin, a Fair Lawn native, patrolled the Jackals' outfield for six seasons from 2004-09, spending more time in a Jackals' uniform than any other position player in team history. His 503 career hits with New Jersey are 204 more than any other Jackal. Smithlin also holds the Jackals' career records for games played (472), runs scored (287), and stolen bases (154).

The number retirement ceremony is part of Fan- demonium Weekend, which includes the Allstate Hat Giveaway (first 1,000 fans) on Friday night, Zach Smithlin's number retirement and a postgame Fireworks Spectacular on Saturday, and Family Funday Sunday ($1 hot dogs, postgame kids run the bases, and a player autograph session). Any fan who buys a ticket to one of the three games will receive a free ticket to Fan Appreciation Day on August 31.

Smithlin (who wore number four) will join Yogi Berra (8) and Joel Bennett (28) among the three retired numbers at Yogi Berra Stadium. Berra, the Hall of Fame catcher for whom the Jackals' stadium is named, resides in Upper Montclair. Bennett went 59-19 with a 2.83 ERA in seven seasons (2001-07) with the Jackals.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2011 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
