May 15, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Worcester, MA (May 15, 2005) â The Worcester Tornadoes today announced that the team has placed four players on waivers, the first transactions made by the new club since training camp opened on May 12. Pitcher Brian Ferdinand, first baseman Greg Gallivan, third baseman Jose Caballero and outfielder Jesse Schmidt were released this afternoon.
The trimmed-down team will now focus their attention to the Brockton Rox, whom the Tornadoes will face in an exhibition game on Monday evening in Brockton. It will mark the first time Worcester will take the field against another Can-Am League club. The game is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Brockton's Campanelli Stadium.
In addition to being Worcester's first-ever exhibition contest, tomorrow night's highlight will be the return of Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd to the Boston area. Boyd, who pitched for the Boston Red Sox from 1982 to 1989 and finished his major league career in 1991, is attempting a comeback as a non-roster invitee for the Rox. The fiery hurler, who last played professionally in 1997, will start for Brockton in the exhibition season opener against the Tornadoes.
The exhibition contest against the Rox is one of two scheduled for the Tornadoes during training camp. Worcester will travel south to take on the New Haven County Cutters on Sunday, May 22, at 2:05 p.m. at Yale Field.
The Tornadoes will open the regular season on the road on Friday, May 27, with a doubleheader against the North Shore Spirit. The team will play a three-game set in Brockton and then four more against the Spirit before returning home to Worcester. The Tornadoes home opener will take place on Monday, June 6, when the Rox visit the newly renovated Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. Festivities for Worcester's first professional baseball Opening Night in more than 70 years are being finalized and will be released shortly.
A dwindling number of tickets still remain for Opening Night, according to the ball club. Tickets for Opening Night and every Tornadoes home game are available at the box office, located 313 Main Street, over the phone by calling (508) 792-2288, or by logging on to www.worcestertornadoes.com. Season tickets and mini-plans are still available, as are birthday party packages and discount rates for group purchases.
