Tornadoes Rally Falls Short

June 10, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

WORCESTER- The North Shore Spirit sent one of the CanAm Leagues premier starting pitchers to the hill in Ryan Bicondoa, who proved to be as good as advertised leading the Spirit to an 8-6 victory over the Tornadoes in front of 2,889 fans at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

Bicondoa (3-0) entered the game with a 0.00 ERA in 14 innings and extended his run of innings without allowing an earned run to 21, by throwing seven strong innings. Bicondoa did however allow four unearned runs.

The Spirit jumped out to a quick lead, when the first four batters of the game all came around to score. Elvis Jiminez (1-1) did not have his best stuff, and it showed early. Spirit leadoff hitter and designated hitter Garrett Weir was a thorn in the side of Tornadoes pitchers all night. Weir went 4-4 with three singles, a double and a walk. Weir scored immediately on a gap shot double by second baseman BJ Weed. Andrew Wishy added a two RBI single in the inning.

Although the Tornadoes managed six runs, they did it on only three hits. Their first run came across in the second without the benefit of a hit. Keith Beauregard began the inning with a walk, reached second on a passed ball and the Tornadoes played small ball from there to bring him in. Beauregard scored on a ground ball fielder's choice by designated hitter Marcos Rodrigues.

The Tornadoes fell behind 7-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh when they started making a comeback. They scored three runs in the seventh on only one hit. The Spirit committed two costly errors in the frame that aided the Tornadoes. All three runs were unearned.

The Spirit tacked on an insurance run in the eighth to put them up by three. The Tornadoes had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom half when the tying run reached as far as second base. The inning started when replacement shortstop Scott Loiseau hit a double, moved to third on an error by the Spirit's second baseman, and came across on a wild pitch. Spirit reliever Erik Drown came in to shut the door and did exactly that by striking out the side.

The ninth proved to be uneventful, as no comeback was in the cards. Dennis Robinson came in for the Spirit to get the save retiring the side in order. For tonight's box score go to http://worcestertornadoes.com.ismmedia.com/ISM2/wor06100.htm

The Tornadoes will finish the series with the Spirit tomorrow (Sunday) at 2:05 P.M. at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. Check out worcestertornadoes.com and catchaconcert.com for all the latest information.
