Worcester Tornadoes News Release
On Super Hero Night at Hannover Insurance Park at Fitton Field, the crowd saw a superhero performance from both dugouts. However, the Tornadoes were able to vanquish their opponents 12-11 after Nick Salotti hit a walk off single to score Ryan Brockett in the bottom of the tenth inning.
Nick Serino showed his super powers as well, coming up with a win after collecting a blown save in the top of the ninth inning. He went one and a third, not allowing a run on a hit and three walks.
Anthony Pluta got tagged with the loss, for he surrendered the game winning single after Ryan Brockett reached base on a single and catcher Alex Trezza walked.
Newark got off to a hot-start with four consecutive hits to start the game, as they plated two runs in the top of the first inning. Worcester responded in the bottom of the first inning with three runs of their own. Brandon Pinckney singled and came into score with two outs on a Johnny Welch RBI double. On the next pitch, Alex Trezza crushed a home run over the right field fence to make it a 3-2 game.
After Newark grabbed the lead back with two runs in the fourth, Worcester tacked on four more runs in the third inning with another big hit from Trezza. Alex Nunez led off with his second triple in as many days, and Pinckney and Edmondson followed with a hit by pitch and a single to make it 4-4. Two batters later, Trezza crushed another three-run homer to right field to plate both runners.
Trezza finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs and five RBI and two walks, while Pinckney finished 2-for-2 and three runs.
Worcester piled on four more runs in the fifth inning to grab what seemed to be a commanding lead. Pinckney led off with a single up the middle and Trezza walked with two outs to put two runners on for Salotti. Salotti knifed a ball into left field to plate both runners and scored easily on a Chris Torres triple into the right field corner. Brendon Kelliher finished the scoring in the fifth with an RBI single that scored Torres.
The Bears began their comeback in the seventh with five runs on just three hits. After the first three batters reached, Mike Mullen nearly got out of the inning, but an error by Trezza on a possible double play ball scored one run and left the bases loaded. Daryle Ward made the Tornadoes pay with a grand slam to right field to bring the score to 11-9.
Newark would tie it in the ninth inning in the midst of a bizarre series of events. Mike Richard led off with a single against Mike McDonald, before McDonald retired the next better. With one down, McDonald struck out pinch hitter Matt Tomcyzk but the ball bounced by Alex Trezza on a wild pitch, as Richard scored and Tomcyzk reached.
Serino came on in relief and walked Danny Santiesteban, before Juan Martinez stepped up for a wacky at-bat. Martinez popped up a foul ball in foul territory that Johnny Welch tried to track down but couldn't get to because Richard wouldn't give his ground. With Martinez getting another chance with two outs, he popped up on the infield but Johnny Welch couldn't make the play as the tying run scored and Santiesteban reached third. Serino worked out of the jam and the Tornadoes went to extras at home for the first time all year: leading to superhero theatrics.
The Tornadoes improved their record to 14-22, inching up the Can-Am standings. The Newark Bears fall to 11-24, and remain at the bottom of the standings.
