Tony Cogan Named Pitcher of the Week for Second Time
July 28, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - For the second week in a row, Gary SouthShore RailCats left-hander Tony Cogan has been named the Northern League's Pitcher of the Week. The veteran starter allowed just one unearned run in his only start of the week, an eight-inning win July 22 in Schaumburg.
Cogan, 32, broke a franchise record in his start Wednesday against the Flyers, extending his scoreless inning streak to 28.2 before allowing that unearned run in the eighth inning, completing a stretch 4.1 innings longer than Josh Habel's all-time mark set August 16-29, 2007. Cogan gave up a Juan Diaz home run leading off the fourth inning July 10 in Winnipeg, then twirled his first career complete-game shutout July 14 against Kansas City, pitched eight shutout innings July 18 at home against Schaumburg and lasted into the eighth without allowing a run Wednesday.
Last week, Cogan also earned the league's Pitcher of the Week nod for his two scoreless starts and becomes the league's first two-time winner of the award this season. His start Wednesday was in game two of a doubleheader and helped the RailCats to a 5-2 win and at the time a share of first place. Cogan allowed only five hits in that start, walking two and striking out three.
Cogan has won three straight starts to improve his season record to 6-5, one win behind the league leaders in victories. Cogan's 3.52 ERA is seventh-best in the league and his 65 strikeouts rank third. In four starts since pitching in his second Northern League All-Star Game July 7, Cogan is 3-0 with a 0.28 ERA, having allowed just two runs (one earned) and 16 hits in 32.0 innings.
The former Kansas City Royals reliever (2001), Cogan is in his third season with the RailCats. In 2007, the Stanford grad saved a franchise-record 25 games and last season he posted a 2.08 ERA, the lowest in a single-season in club history. In 73 RailCats appearances, Cogan has a 2.97 ERA and has allowed opposing hitters just a .227 average.
Each week during the season, the Northern League awards a Player and Pitcher of the Week. Closer Andy Shipman, named the league's Pitcher of the Week on June 21, is the only other RailCats player to earn either award in 2009. Fargo-Moorhead outfielder Nic Jackson was named the Player of the Week for July 27. The Pitcher of the Week award is the fifth of Cogan's RailCats career.
Cogan (6-5, 3.52 ERA) will be on the mound tonight at 6:05 p.m. when the RailCats continue a nine-game road trip at Silver Cross Field against the Joliet JackHammers. Derek Barrows (2-1, 6.00 ERA) will counter for Joliet, with every pitch available live on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, or www.railcatsbaseball.com.
