Flyers Split Twin-Bill

SCHAUMBURG, IL-Catcher Alan Rick went 2-2 with a home run, triple, and three RBIs, and three Fargo pitchers combined to hold the Flyers scoreless as the RedHawks shut out the Flyers 6-0 in game two of a doubleheader.
The Flyers best chance to score came in the bottom of the second. Victor Ferrante led the inning off with a triple, his fifth of the season, which is good for second in the Northern League-but Fellman struck out Craig Maddox and Richard Mercado, and then induced a groundout from Jeff Dunbar.
In the top of the third, Alan Rick hit a solo home run, his 13th of the season and his second of the day. The RedHawks scratched one more across in the third when Mike Coles scored on a groundball by Nic Jackson. The Flyers could not complete what would have been an inning-ending double play, as Jose Valdez's throw bounced past the first baseman Dunbar, allowing Coles to come home.
The Flyers had another chance in the bottom of the fifth when Jeff Dunbar led off the inning with a double, but Fellman struck out TJ Wilson. Then, Jeremiah Piepkorn made a diving stop on a ground ball by Lyndon Poole, saving a run. A fly out by Travis Brown ended the threat.
Rick was at it again in the top of the sixth, knocking a two-run triple over the head of Poole in center off reliever Joseph Campbell, scoring Justin Justice and Carlo Cota to extend the lead to 4-0.
In the top of the seventh, Randall Simon hit a line drive two-run home run off Campbell that just got over the wall in right field, his seventh of the season, giving the RedHawks a 6-0 lead.
T.J. Stanton pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to finish off the shutout for the RedHawks in seven innings.
Nick Fellman threw five shutout innings, giving up just four hits and striking out eight to improve his record to 3-5. Jason Richardson pitched well in his Flyers debut. He pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits while striking out nine-the most for a Flyer pitcher all year-but his record drops to 2-9.
In game one, Victor Ferrante's team-leading 12th home run of the season capped a seven-run second inning as the Flyers topped Fargo-Moorhead 8-6.
The RedHawks got the first runs on the board in the seven-inning game in the first two innings. Nic Jackson hit an RBI double down the right field line that took a Fargo-hop and scored Zach Penprase in the top of the first.
In the top of the second inning, catcher Jeff Stevens hit a two-out RBI single to score Ruben Salazar, extending the lead to 2-0.
The bottom of the second proved to be an offensive explosion for the Flyers as they lit up RedHawks starter Garry Bakker. The inning began with three singles in a row by Richard Mercado, Jeff Dunbar, and TJ Wilson. Centerfielder Lyndon Poole, the newest Flyer, roped a double to right field scoring Mercado and Dunbar. It was Poole's first hit and RBI as a Flyer.
Schaumburg was far from done in the second. Travis Brown brought home Wilson on an RBI single. After a double steal by Poole and Brown, Tony Mansolino hit an RBI groundout scoring Poole. Jose Valdez then became the fourth Flyer in a row to notch an RBI, driving a single to score Brown. Then Ferrante put the exclamation point on the inning, cranking his homer. The seven-run inning tied for the most the Flyers have scored in an inning this season.
The RedHawks narrowed the lead in their half of the fourth thanks to a two-run home run by Carlo Cota that hit the scoreboard in left field, his ninth of the season, off Flyers starter Carmen Pignatiello.
Alan Rick hit his first of two homers on the night, a pinch-hit two-run homer in the top of the sixth off reliever Kris Jiggitts, to cut the Flyers lead to one.
Schaumburg added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to the speed of Poole. After a single, Poole stole second even when the RedHawks threw a pitchout. Then Travis Brown hit a single to shallow left field that Poole scored on standing up, extending the lead to 8-6. Poole went 3-3 with two runs, two stolen bases, and two RBIs in his Flyers debut.
Cephas Howard came on in the seventh (last) inning and struck out the side for his fourth save. Pignatiello pitched 5.1 innings, giving up five runs on six hits, but got the win and improves his record to 5-7. Bakker gave up eight runs in 5.2 innings, falling to 4-4 on the year.
The two teams meet up again tomorrow with a 7:05 first pitch. RHP Dustin Glant (5-3, 4.35) gets the ball for the Flyers against LHP Scott Fogelson (3-2, 4.10).
