Johnstown Tomahawks News Release
The Johnstown Tomahawks maintained second place in the NAHL North Division with a 3-2 shootout win over the Springfield Jr. Blues on Sunday, Oct. 6. Omar Mullan and Tyler Basham scored the goals in regulation, and Jordan Watt and Mitch Hall each added goals in the shootout win, which brought Johnstown to a 6-4-1 (13 points) record on the season.
Mullan opened the scoring in the second when he backhanded the puck past Lekkas at 6:19. It was Mullan's fourth goal in five games for the Tomahawks. While on the power play, Springfield tied the game on a Patrick Curry goal at 14:26.
Springfield took a 2-1 lead early in the third period, when Davis Dekorte scored on Okicki at 1:26.
Johnstown tied the game at 6:32 on a goal by Tyler Basham. Both teams had opportunities down the stretch, but goaltenders Alex Okicki and Stefanos Lekkas stood strong, sending the game to overtime.
After a scoreless overtime period, the game moved to a shootout. Johnstown's Jordan Watt and Mitch Hall each scored in the shootout, and Okicki allowed only one goal on five shots to earn the victory and the weekend sweep.
The Tomahawks have now won four straight games and currently trail North Division leader Port Huron by three points.
The game marked the return of the Tomahawks' Pucks and Paws promotion, during which fans were invited to bring their dogs to the game in exchange for a donation benefiting the Johnstown K-9 Police. Sixty-two dogs were in attendance for the game. Nonprofit animal advocacy group Habitat For Hounds also had adoptable pets at the game, with one animal successfully finding a new home because of the promotion.
Johnstown travels next weekend to Flint, Mich., to take on the Michigan Warriors. Their next home series will come against the Soo Eagles on Oct. 24-26.
