Todd clutch in opening game win
September 26, 2006 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
Most regular season trends were thrown in the trash with the playoffs getting underway. Two were not - Denny Harriger's ability to win games and Jeremy Todd being the Barnstormers big man with runners in scoring position.
Todd delivered three RBI hits and broke two ties while Harriger limited Atlantic City to five hits and three runs in seven strong innings as Lancaster topped Atlantic City, 8-3, in the opener of a best-of-three divisional series Tuesday evening at Bernie Robbins Stadium.
Lancaster needs to win once the next two nights to advance to the Atlantic League finals against the winner of a series between Bridgeport and Long Island.
Todd launched a two-run homer in the third for a 3-1 Barnstormers lead. When that did not hold, he delivered Jason Bowers, who reached on a throwing error by third baseman Joe Jiannetti, with a bloop single to left. Jose Ortiz followed with a two-run blast off the scoreboard for a 6-3 lead.
Bowers, who reached safely on every plate appearance, lined a bullet off the glove of Enohel Polanco, who had just moved into the third base position to start the ninth. The Lancaster shortstop scored for the third time in the game when Todd drilled a double to right. After an infield out advanced Todd to third, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Eric Crozier.
Harriger served up a home run to Ozzie Timmons with two outs in the first. He fell into trouble in the fourth when Raul Marval and Jiannetti stroked singles to place runners at first and third with one out. Dario Delgado brought both home with a double inside the third base bag to tie the game at three. Harriger then retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced in his seven-inning stint. James Lira and Charlie Weatherby finished up for the Barnstormers.
NOTES: Josh Stevens (2-0) will face Andy High (7-7) in Game Two Wednesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium...There are still tickets available.
