Toby Johnson Invited to Workout with Buffalo Bills
August 30, 2020 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Massachusetts Pirates News Release
Defensive tackle Toby Johnson is hoping to move on up.
The former Massachusetts Pirate will be getting another chance at the NFL working out for the Buffalo Bills.
Johnson's most notable tenure in the NFL was with the Minnesota Vikings. In the fourth 2016 preseason game against the now Los Angeles Rams, Johnson made a diving interception which he mirrored as a member of the Massachusetts Pirates.
After a successful stint with the XFL's New York Guardians shortened due to COVID-19, Johnson got back to work in his home state of Georgia as well as Orlando, Florida where his persistence paid off.
Johnson is excited to get this opportunity after endless weeks of work.
I've been waiting on this moment," Johnson told masspiratesfootball.com. "I was in a dark place a year ago so I just went out there with that mindset that I was gonna do whatever it takes to get back to the highest level and prove that I belong."
Pirates President and General Manager Jawad Yatim, though proud of Johnson, expected this opportunity to come for him sooner rather than later.
"I'm not the least bit surprised and neither is he. He's been busting his butt everyday staying ready for this type of opportunity and I think he's going to perform at the level they want him to up there in Buffalo," Yatim told masspiratesfootball.com. "He has tremendous football intellect, very meticulous when it comes to details and fundamentals, great quickness off the ball. However what separates Toby from the rest of the defensive lineman at this level in my opinion is his hand fighting skill set. His ability to use his hands is what I'm most impressed with and the more I try to recruit someone with a similar skill set the more I realize how rare it is at this level. Couldn't be happier for him, he deserves everything that comes his way and he's got a bunch of people here in Massachusetts rooting for him."
