Wilson Tobs News Release
EDENTON, N.C. - A two-run double from left fielder Ben Faso in the top of the third inning helped the Wilson Tobs erase a 1-0 deficit against the Edenton Steamers on Tuesday night as the Tobs recorded a 6-1 win on the road against the Steamers.
Faso finished the contest 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and one walk. Kevin McGowan delivered a two-run home run for the Tobs in the top of the sixth inning to spark a three-run rally. McGowan finished the night 2-for-4 with a run scored and one walk. Matt McCourt added a solo home run in his first game for the Tobs.
Edenton started the scoring against Josh Arnold in the bottom of the first inning. Following a single from Rich Ciufo in the bottom of the first inning, Zane Harris laced a double off the wall in left field to plate Ciufo.
Wilson loaded the bases in the top of the second inning with one out, only to see the Steamers escape the threat with a pair of strikeouts. The Tobs rallied in the top of the third as Caleb Dean worked a walk with two outs in the frame. Following a walk to Shamoy Christopher, Faso doubled to left field to plate both Dean and Christopher to make it 2-1.
The Tobs upped their lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a weird turn of events. McCourt started the inning by reaching base on a dropped third strike and a wild pitch. McCourt would then advance to second and third following two more wild pitches. Carson Freeman would strikeout and reach first base on another wild pitch as McCourt scored from third on the play.
McCourt and McGowan would each go yard in the sixth inning to put the Tobs ahead 6-1. The Tobs bullpen did their part to keep the Steamers off the scoreboard, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings of relief. The bullpen yielded just three hits while recording eight strikeouts.
Danny Cody (2-0) earned the win for the Tobs after tossing a scoreless sixth inning. Arnold took the no-decision for the Tobs after exiting the game with one out in the fifth inning. Arnold fanned six batters and walked three while yielding one run off five hits. Tripper Ergle worked out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh inning after allowing a pair of hits. Ergle responded by fanning three consecutive batters to end the frame.
Wilson is back at Historic Fleming Stadium on Wednesday night for its July 4th Firework Extravaganza presented by Thomas Law Attorneys. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with the first pitch to follow at 6 p.m.
The Wilson Tobs enter their 22nd season as a founding member of the Coastal Plain League.
