
Steamers Stumble in Second Half Doubleheader Opener

The Edenton Steamers opened up the second half of the season dropping each contest in the doubleheader on the road against Martinsville on Monday Night. The Mustangs won 7-4 and 6-3 to improve to 3-0 in the second half.
Martinsville's Parker Chavers ran away with the night going 3-for-5 with two triples, one double and three runs batted in. He also crossed home three times and drew one base on balls.
The Mustangs scored six runs in the opening three innings of Game 1 against starter Matt Gill, who was tabbed with the loss. Gill allowed five earned runs in 2.2 innings with three strikeouts.
Edenton tried climbing back into it with a run in the third and three more in the fourth frame. Anthony Warneke exploded for three hits and two RBI from the leadoff spot. He now leads the team this summer in runs batted in with 19.
Will Ethridge added more pressure with a one-run double.
Angelo Gennari and Troy Maslowski came out relief for the Steamers and did not surrender an earned run.
Collin Storms started Game 2 and went four innings, handing Martinsville six runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk. Holden Drake dazzled out of the pen, humming two shutout frames to bring his season earned run average to 2.70.
Rich Ciufo finished 2-for-4 with one RBI. Bryson Worrell, Devon Gardner, Tyler Jones and Josh Martinez added one hit each.
Edenton next plays on Tuesday night at home against the Wilson Tobs for a 7 p.m. start.
