Steamers Strand 14 to Remain Winless in Second Half
July 3, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release
The Edenton Steamers stranded 14 runners on Tuesday night at Hicks Field to fall to the Wilson Tobs 6-1, dropping to 0-3 to commence the second half. The Tobs jumped to 2-0.
The Clams struck first in the opening inning with a RBI double from Zane Harris to score Rich Ciufo, but that was all Edenton could muster for the remainder of the contest.
Among Ciufo, Harris and Ben Whetstone, the three hitters reached base a combined 10 times and only scored once. The Steamers ensuing hitters struggled to close out on the Wilson pitchers. In the seventh inning, Edenton had runners on second and third base with no outs, but Tripper Ergle dug deep and fanned the next three Clams at the plate.
Charles Hall started his second game of the season and struck out a team season-high 11 batters in just four innings. Oddly, Hall could not make it past the fourth, stressing 90 pitches with five walks.
Jorge Lozano tossed his best outing out of the bullpen, going for two shutout innings with two strikeouts.
Harris finished 2-for-4 with two walks and one run batted in. Whetstone added two hits and two more base on balls.
Now through three games in the closing half of the season, Edenton has left 27 runners on over 23 innings.
For Wilson, Matt McCourt went 1-for-5 with a home run and four strikeouts and a hit by pitch in his summer debut. Kevin McGowan blasted his first home run in the sixth inning, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk.
Caleb Dean held a good eye at the dish with three walks.
Danny Cody earned the win, throwing one frame. Josh Arnold started and battled for 4.1 innings with six strikeouts and three walks, giving up one run.
Edenton has an off day on July 4 and returns Thursday night at home playing against the Tobs once more for a 7 p.m. start.
