WILSON, N.C. (June 30, 2011) - Ryan Mathews belted two homeruns off Outer Banks starter Matt Pierpont, to lead the Wilson Tobs (15-13) past the Outer Banks Daredevils (11-15), 11-1 on Thursday night at Fleming Stadium in front of 1,879 in attendance.

The two homers put Mathews' season total at 10, two away from the Tobs franchise record for long balls in a season. The win gave Wilson a three-game win streak to close out the first half of the Coastal Plain League season.

Mathews' first homer of the night came in the bottom of the first inning with two outs. First baseman Joe Costigan got hit by a pitch to extend the inning, and then Mathews made the Daredevils pay by launching a bomb off the scoreboard in left to put Wilson up 2-0.

Outer Banks made it a one-run game in the top of the third when the leadoff hitter in the inning, 2B Mike Levine, was hit by a pitch as well. Levine advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt laid down by CF Chris Reese, and he scored from second on a single by RF Donnie Corsner, making it 2-1 Tobs.

Then the flood gates opened for Wilson in the fifth when the lineup batted around. The Tobs managed five runs on five hits in the frame, capped by a three-run blast from Mathews that landed well past the wall in left-center field. Left fielder Keith Morrisroe and Costigan were each brought home by the homerun, which gave Mathews a team season-high five RBI on the night.

The Tobs added another run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to insure the win for starter Gil Walker (2-0), who allowed one run on six hits over seven innings. Taking the loss for the Daredevils was Pierpont (1-1) in his first start of the summer. Pierpont lasted 4.2 innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out six.

The Tobs begin the second half of the season with a two-game road trip following a day off tomorrow. The first game of the road trip is at Forest City on Saturday, July 2, with first pitch scheduled for 7:30pm. On the hill for Wilson will be RHP Clay Murphy (1-1), making his fourth start of the summer. The first Tobs home game of the second half will be Monday, July 4. There will be fireworks after the game sponsored by Thomas and Farris Attorneys. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
