High Point-Thomasville HiToms News Release

MARTINSVILLE, V.A. - Martinsville scored four runs in the sixth inning to turn a one run deficit into a three run lead and held off a late Thomasville rally to defeat the HiToms 9-5 to close the first half of the Coastal Plain League season on Thursday night at Hooker Field in Martinsville.

The Mustangs added four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off Johnny Hoffman to claim a five run lead headed to the ninth inning. However, the HiToms loaded the bases with no one out in the ninth against Demarius Johnson and could only manage one run as they fell to Martinsville 9-5.

Tim Brechbuehler (L, 1-1) lived on the edge all night as he escaped several scoring situations throughout his outing, however, Martinsville (13-13) caught up to him in the fifth inning as Martinsville loaded the bases with two outs for Justin Sizemore who doubled to the gap in right center to bring all three runners home and after all the dust settled in the fifth inning, the HiToms trailed 5-2.

After falling behind by a single run in the bottom of the third, Thomasville (14-14) battled back to claim a one run lead in the top of the fourth inning as Patrick Koontz and Kevin Sanders delivered RBI singles to score Jacob Rogers and Alex Williams respectively which came the HiToms a 2-1 lead.

Trailing by three entering the sixth inning, the HiToms came storming back with one out as Brock Hebert singled to plate Chaz Frank which brought Thomasville to within a pair of runs. The Martinsville lead was trimmed down to a single run following the second RBI from Williams, this one a chopper through the right side to make it 5-4 ahead of Patrick Koontz who flew out to the wall in left center to end the inning and keep Martinsville in the lead by a run.

The HiToms end the first half of the season having lost all four games they've played inside Hooker Field this season, the loss also breaks a three game winning streak for the Tommies.

Thomasville is back at home tomorrow at 7:00 when they host the Peninsula Pilots at historic Finch Field.
