FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Mike Anarumo carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, helping the Fayetteville SwampDogs capture the first-half CPL South Division championship with a 3-1 win over the Edenton Steamers on Thursday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium.
Anarumo (3-0) had his no-hitter broken up on an infield single with one out in the eighth inning. He finished the night allowing just that one hit in eight innings, walking two and hitting a batter while striking out seven.
The win assures the SwampDogs of a postseason berth, their fifth in seven seasons under head coach Darrell Handelsman. They will host game one of the quarterfinal series of the Petitt Cup playoffs, regardless of final seeding.
Fayetteville (17-11) scored two runs on four straight two-out singles in the bottom of the third inning. Jay Cannon and Eric Grabe started the rally, and John Hogan delivered the two-run single off Steamers' starter Dave Bartuska (2-2) to give the SwampDogs a lead they would never relinquish.
Edenton (19-8) got their only run in the top of the fifth, when Zach Stewart was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a dropped flyball by Cody Davis. Davis would eventually redeem himself by throwing a scoreless ninth to secure the victory with his seventh save.
The SwampDogs added insurance in the bottom of the seventh inning when Dylan Brown hit his first homerun as a SwampDog off Steamers reliever David Teasley. The 'Dogs had eight hits total, more than enough for Anarumo on this night to clinch a spot in the postseason.
The SwampDogs open up the second half of the season at home on Friday against the Columbia Blowfish. It's Recycle Night, presented by Dex, as the first 500 fans will receive a free logo baseball courtesy of Dex. It's also East Carolina Night and Christmas in July, so be sure to get to the park early. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
