Tobs Drop CPL Opener to Pilots

June 1, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilson Tobs News Release

WILSON, N.C. - The Wilson Tobs opened Coastal Plain League play on May 31 against the Peninsula Pilots and despite a solid effort, the Tobs fell short to the Pilots 8-4.

Fleming Stadium hosted about 1,000 for the ball game, many of whom enjoyed the first "All-You-Can-Eat" Tuesday of the season.

Evan Nations got the start for Aaron Lynch's Tobs and recorded a pair of strikeouts in his three innings.

Peninsula started quick as a series of three hits plated three runs and sent the Pilots ahead 3-0. However, aggressive base running and a poor throw from home plated Jimmy Latona in the home half of the third inning.

Three batters later, Conner Leonard sent a soaring homerun to make the game 3-2. It was Leonard's second homer in as many games.

After Brandon Vogler gave the Tobs a solid two innings, Willie McRae legged out an infield single, stole second base, and advance a bag on a pair of ground balls to make his way around the bases and tie the game.

Wilson held firm, retiring Pilot batters with different pithcers. However, things crumbled in the seventh after the Tobs plunked two batters and walked another to load the bases. Peninsula pushed across three in the seventh inning to take the lead 6-3.

Resiliently the Tobs pushed across a run in the eighth after an RBI double from McRae scored Chad Frazier, but that was all the comeback Wilson could muster.

The Pilots added a pair of insurance markers in the eighth and good closing pitching retired the Tobs in short order. The Pilots prevailed, 8-4.

Wilson hits the road to tangle with the Morehead City Marlins on June 1, they will return to Fleming Stadium on Thursday, June 2 to face the Petersburg Generals on a Throwback Thirsty Thursday. It'll be Miller Light 80's Night, so come enjoy the fun!
