Tobs Bats Come Alive

Wilson Tobs News Release


PETERSBURG VA- The Wilson Tobs (1-1) were road warriors on Wednesday night defeating the Petersburg Generals (0-2) by a score of 14-4. The Tobs hit everything that came their way one night after they were held to two hits and zero runs in the season opener. The Tobs have had Petersburg number in recent memory, winning 12 of the last 13 meetings.

The Wilson Tobs opened the scoring after the first two men reached base in the bottom of the 2nd; Chris Rawilngs (Barton College) took a 1-0 pitch to right field for a base clearing triple. Ryan Daughtry (Barton College) who was hit by a pitch to open the inning and Alex Jones (Northern Illinois), who doubled Daughtry to third, both scored on the triple. The Tobs added two more on a 2 out 2 run double by Jones in the third. Scoring on the play once again was Daughtry and leadoff man Brandon Elliot (Murray State).

The Generals cut Wilson's lead in half in the bottom of the 3rdon a 2 out-2 run Triple by Owen Beightol. That was the Generals first hit of the game and both runners on base reached via the walk.

The Tobs come right back in the top of the 4th inning scoring five runs highlighted by a great call by Manager Bruce Johnson, who called for the safety squeeze which at the time made the score 7-2. Wilson tacked on two more and led 9-2 after three and a half innings of play. Wilson was not done; in the fifth they added four more runs on an Angelo LaBruna RBI single and a Jeff Kremer three-run Triple. The score after five innings was 13-2 Tobs. Wilson added a solo run in the 8th making the score of 14-2.

The Generals added two runs in the 8th off reliever Tyler Saltsmen (Murray State) on three hits, the big blow came on an RBI double by Chase Barnes (Pittsburg State). The score going to the ninth was Wilson 14 and Petersburg 4. That was it for the scoring. The Final Score was Wilson 14 and Petersburg 4.

The final line score for Tobs starter Brice Rivenbark (1-0) (Winston-Salem State) was seven innings pitched, two hits two runs, both earned with 10 strikeouts and five walks. Saltsmen relieved Rivenbark in the 8th his line was two innings pitched, three hits, two runs, three walks, and one strike out. The losing pitcher was J.T. Wauford (0-1).

The Tobs return home to Fleming Stadium Thursday night to take on the Asheboro Copperheads with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. Wilson will send RHP Chase Bebout (0-0 0.00) to the hill against RHP Josh White (0-0 0.00) for Asheboro. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
