Marlins Drop Season Opener in Florence

June 1, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins fell to the hands of the hosting Florence RedWolves last night, losing their season opener by a score of 12-5.

The inconsistency of the Marlins pitching staff served as the vehicle for the loss. Starter Stephen Howell was shaky, giving up 8 runs on 8 hits in his 2.1 innings of work, including a two-run blast by the RedWolves' Tripp Faulk that finished Howell's night in the third.

Morehead City's pitching performed progressively better following Howell's exit, though. Appalachian State side-winder Tyler Moore then threw for 3.2 innings and surrendered one run on four hits. However, after not hitting a batter all spring for the Mountaineers, Moore beamed two Florence batters.

Tulane freshman Alex Facundus finished on the mound for the Marlins, throwing 1.1 perfect innings, striking out one and displaying his impressive breaking ball.

Bright spots within the Morehead City lineup included Sam Kimmel, who went 3-for-5 at the dish, and Andrew Alford, who was 2-for-4.

The Marlins will play their home opener of the 2011 Coastal Plain League season tonight at 7:05 p.m., welcoming the Asheboro Copperheads to Big Rock Stadium.
