
Steamer Nearly Blow Big Lead, But Hold on for 7-6 Victory

EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers (2-0) of the Coastal Plain League took a 7-1 lead into the ninth inning against the Peninsula Pilots (0-1) Wednesday night at Historic Hicks Field, only to see it evaporate as the Pilots pulled to within 7-6. Ryan Turner saved Esterlin Paulino's first win of the season, while Kyle Haynes took his first loss of the season.
After a scoreless inning and half at Hicks Field; a throwing error started a rally for the Steamers. A high chopper off the bat of third baseman Mitch Wells was fielded by the Pilots pitcher Kyle Haynes off the right side of the mound. Haynes threw the ball down the right field line and Wells was standing at second base. Zack Stewart; making his first start; hit a double over the head of left fielder Terrell Joyce that brought home Wells and gave the Steamers a 1-0 lead.
Edenton added a run in the bottom of the third after Brian Blasik singled to lead off the inning and stole second base. Joe Wendle picked up his fourth RBI of the season with a ground out to plate Blasik and give the Steamers the 2-0 lead.
Peninsula cut the Steamer lead in half in the top half of the fourth inning with a single off the bat of Joey Burney; who then stole second base and came home on an RBI single by Jacob Pierce.
The Steamers added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out Polonius walked, followed by a Joe Wendle single that put runners on first and third. Wendle took off to steal second base and on the throw Polonius took home safely to make it 3-1 Steamers. Four batters later with the bases loaded Zack Stewart struck out; but was able to reach on an error charged to the Pilots catcher that allowed Wendle to score and make it 4-1 Steamers.
The Steamers offense got going again in the bottom of the seventh when Vinnie Meija brought home Wendle with an RBI double and Zack Stewart put one over the center field wall for a 7-1 Steamers lead.
7-1 remained the score until the top of the ninth. The Steamers were forced to use three different pitchers to record the final three outs. Peninsula brought home five runs against Jordan Moore and Dustin Quattrocchi before Ryan Turner was able to record the final out on a pop-up to Polonius at short.
