TRENTON, NJ (March 4, 2005) â The Trenton Titans scored twice in the last 1:19 of regulation, to send the game into overtime before falling to the Greenville Growl, 8-7, in a shootout in front of 6,052 fans at Sovereign Bank Arena.
Scoring started early, as Scott Bertoli netted the game's first goal at 1:53 of the first period. His 19th of the season was assisted by Stephen Wood and Nick Deschenes.
Neither team scored again in the first, but the second period turned into a shootout of its own. Eight total goals were scored in the second â the first three by Grrrowl players. Jason Metcalfe, Colin Pepperall, and J.F. Plourde all scored by the 9:09 mark, giving Greenville a 3-1 lead.
But Deschenes struck back for the Titans at 9:30 to pull within one. Then Leon Hayward netted his ninth of the season at 13:27 to tie the game at 3-3.
Grrrowl forward Alex Kojenikov gave his team the lead again with his 10th of the year at 14:55. But the lead was short-lived as Deschenes fired another wrister past Greenville goaltender Mike Brodeur for his second goal of the night and 14th of the year.
Greenville forward Carl Mallette netted one more for the Grrrowl before the second intermission, giving his team a 5-4 lead.
Bertoli's second goal of the night at 4:50 in the third tied the game. But Greenville took control with two goals of their own â Pepperall and Mallette each scoring his second each of the night, at 6:59 and 7:50 respectively.
However, Deschenes single-handedly brought the Titans back late in the third period when his third and fourth goals, at 18:41 and 19:50, sent the game into an improbable overtime period. The second-year pro finished the night with two additional assists, for a total of six points.
After a scoreless overtime, Richard Pitirri scored the game-winner against Chris Houle in a shootout.
