Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Indiana - TinCaps first baseman Carlos Belen hit a grand slam as part of an eight-run seventh inning on Wednesday afternoon as Fort Wayne topped the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays), 9-4, at Parkview Field.
Lansing (4-3) got on the board in the top of the first inning. After Samad Taylor led off the inning with a triple to center field, Kevin Vicuna brought him home with a single to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Lugnuts scored again in the top of the third. With two outs and Kevin Smith on second, Christian Williams lined a ball to right field, bringing around Smith and making the advantage 2-0.
Fort Wayne (1-6) got one back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Left fielder Jack Suwinski sent a 1-2 curveball from Yennsy Diaz over the right-field wall, cutting the lead in half to 2-1. The home run was Suwinski's second in three games.
Lansing responded with a home run of its own in the seventh. Taylor rocketed a ball 412 feet to center field to take back a two-run lead, 3-1.
The TinCaps bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh inning. A walk and two singles loaded the bases for center fielder Jeisson (pronounced: YAY-son) Rosario when he hit a line drive to right field, scoring Suwinski and Reinaldo Ilarraza to tie the game, 3-3.
After the single, second baseman Esteury Ruiz picked up his first RBI of the season with a line drive to left field, scoring catcher Jalen Washington, and giving Fort Wayne its first lead of the afternoon, 4-3.
One more run came across for the TinCaps via a Lugnuts error to set up the biggest at-bat of the day.
With Ruiz at third, right fielder Tirso Ornelas on second, and shortstop Gabriel Arias at first, Belen gave an 0-1 slider a ride to left field, and in grand style, Fort Wayne took a commanding lead, 9-3.
TinCaps starter Nick Margevicius provided his second strong outing in as many appearances. The left-hander went 5 2/3 innings, allowing only two earned runs, while striking out six.
