Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps shut out the Burlington Bees, 2-0, Wednesday at Parkview Field to take a two-game lead in the Midwest League Championship Series. RHP Chris Fetter went 5.1 innings to snag the win and Allan Dykstra pounded a solo home run in the 6th to pad the Fort Wayne lead. The teams travel to Community Field in Burlington, Iowa, to close out the series. The next TinCaps' victory would clinch the first Midwest League championship in franchise history.
Wednesday's win was Fort Wayne's 100th of the year, counting regular-season and playoff games.
Fetter, LHP Nick Greenwood and RHPs Alexis Lara and Nick Schumacher combined on a four- hit shutout, the 19th of the season for the Fort Wayne pitching staff. The Bees only advanced runners into scoring position on two occasions: once in the 3rd , once in the 8th .
The TinCaps jumped ahead in the bottom of the 2nd . Cole Figueroa took a leadoff walk, went to second on Dykstra's single, advanced to third on Robert Lara's single and scored on a wild pitch by Burlington RHP Mike Lehmann.
In the 6th , Dykstra slammed a Brendan Lafferty fastball over the right-field wall, his 13th of the year, to put the TinCaps ahead, 2-0.
Burlington had its best scoring opportunity in the 8th . Jason Morales ripped a one-out double and went to third on a groundout by Ryan Wood. But when Fernando Garcia smashed a grounder to the right side of the infield, Fort Wayne second baseman Kevin Hansen made a diving stop, spun and threw out Garcia to squelch the Bees' rally.
Greenwood fired two innings in relief, striking out three of the six batters he faced.
Fetter (3-1) was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits and striking out four in 5.1 innings. Lehmann (5-8) was saddled with the loss, yielding a run in the 2.1 innings. The TinCaps improved to 100-48 for the season. Burlington fell to 68-78 overall.
Fort Wayne and the Bees (Class-A Kansas City Royals) play Game 3 of the best-of-five Midwest League Championship Series Thursday at 7:30pm Eastern time at Community Field in Burlington, Iowa. LHP Mike Watt (7-4) gets the starting nod for the TinCaps against Burlington RHP Manauris Baez (8-6).
Parkview Field will be open Thursday night during the game in Burlington with concession stands open and the TinCaps' radio broadcast playing through the public address system. Fans unable to make it to Iowa are encouraged to attend and cheer on the TinCaps.
