Washington Mystics News Release
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mystics center Tina Charles has been named to the All-WNBA Second Team, the WNBA announced today, marking the ninth time she has been named to an All-WNBA team. Charles was named to the All-WNBA First Team in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2017 and All-WNBA Second Team in 2010, 2013 2014 and 2021.
Playing in her 11th career season, Charles averaged a league leading and career-best 23.4 points per game, the sixth best points per game average in league history. She also totaled 9.6 rebounds (fourth most) and 2.1 assists in 27 games (all starts). The Connecticut standout averaged 14.0 first-half points, the most points averaged in a half in league history. Charles shot a career-best .365 from three-point range on 5.1 attempts per game, joining Jonquel Jones as the only players to shoot .360 or better from three-point territory and averaged eight or more rebounds per game this season [min. two 3PA p/g]. During the season, she totaled 12 double-doubles and moved into second place on the all-time double-doubles and rebounds lists.
Charles broke numerous league and franchise records this season. She holds the franchise record for the most points scored in a single season (631) and amassed the fifth-most rebounds (258) in a season in franchise history. She totaled 10 30+ point games, the most 30+ point games in a season in franchise history and tied for the second-most games in a single season in WNBA history. She recorded 30+ point/15+ rebound games in consecutive games, becoming the first player in league history to accomplish this feat (Charles did this twice; 6/19-6/22 and 7/3-7/10). Charles also scored 25+ points in seven consecutive games (6/19-7/10), the longest 25+ point game streak in league history.
The 2012 MVP joins Diana Taurasi (2013, 2018), Lauren Jackson (2010) and Lisa Leslie (2006) as the only players to average 20 or more points in a season in the 10th year or later of their career, and she joins Lisa Leslie as the only players to average at least 15 points and seven rebounds in 11 consecutive seasons.
Charles won her third Gold Medal in Tokyo this past summer after being named to the 2020 U.S. Olympic Women's Basketball Team. She competed in her eighth career All-Star and was named WNBA Player of the Week Twice (6/7-6/13; 9/6-9/12) and Kia WNBA Player of the Month for June.
