Plymouth Whalers News Release

PLYMOUTH - It took all of 20:50 for the Plymouth Whalers to get even with the Owen Sound Attack and then the Whalers pulled away for good in a 5-3 victory over their Western Conference rivals in an Ontario Hockey League game played Friday night at Compuware Arena.

Plymouth (25-22-5-0) continues in a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference with Sarnia (25-21-2-3), who defeated Niagara, 1-0, tonight. The Whalers and Sting are one point behind Erie (27-23-2-0), who defeated Sault Ste. Marie tonight, 4-3, in a shootout.

Eight different players scored in the game. Plymouth received goals from Jamie Devane (4), first-star Beau Schmitz (4), Tyler G. Brown (4), Chris Terry (team-leading 27th) and Tyler Seguin (10). Owen Sound replied with goals from second star Marcus Carroll (20), Paul Bezzo (1) and Steven Shipley (14).

After Carroll and Devane traded first period goals, Bezzo picked up a loose puck at the top of the slot and beat Plymouth goaltender Matt Hackett with the hard shot at 0:32. But Schmitz came back 0:18 to re-tie the game with a shot from the right circle that beat Owen Sound goaltender Tyler Beskorowany at the far post.

"I'm not going to lie to you - I was shooting (for the) five-hole," Schmitz said with a smile after the game. "Luck was on my side when I got that one. Every game I feel like I'm getting better. There's always something I can improve on. I never want to be satisfied with my play. Every game, I'm feeling more comfortable."

Tyler G. Brown gave Plymouth its first lead at 14:01 of the second period as he accepted a pass from Matt Caria out of the right corner and beat Beskorowany with a one-timer from the hashmarks. Terry extended the Whalers lead to 4-2 0:55 later when he tucked his shot from the right circle just in side the near post.

"The play actually started in the neutral zone," Terry said about his goal. "We were trapping them pretty good there and (Matt) Caria created a turnover and made a good pass across to (Leo) Jenner. Jenner was driving wide (on the left wing in the Owen Sound zone) and had a step on the defender. I was just trying to get there for a rebound, but Jenner made a fabulous pass right to me. I put the shot on net and the puck hit the post and the back of the goalie and went in. So it was kind of a lucky goal, but it was a great pass by Jenner."

The teams traded a goal aside in the third period - Shipley at 15:43 and then Seguin, who tucked a backhand past Beskorowany at 17:30.

Owen Sound outshot Plymouth, 49-45.

Plymouth is back in action Saturday night at 7:05 pm, hosting Belleville (35-14-2-2). Tickets are available by calling the Compuware Arena box office at (734) 453-8400.
