August 23, 2011 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Closing out their busiest month of the regular season, the Portland Timbers play host to Chivas USA on Wednesday at JELD-WEN Field at 8 p.m. (PT) before traveling to take on D.C. United on Saturday at RFK Stadium at 4:30 p.m. (PT). Portland faces its second straight two-game week.
Both Wednesday's and Saturday's match will be televised live throughout the Northwest region on ROOT SPORTS, with local radio broadcasts on 750 AM The Game and in Spanish on La Pantera 940 AM.
The Timbers (8-12-5, 29pts) enter the week just three points back of the 10th and final playoff position, which is currently held by the New York Red Bulls (6-6-14) with 32 points. Portland's opponents this week - Chivas USA and D.C. United - sit just ahead of the Timbers in the playoff race, locked at 31 points each.
Coming off a 2-1 win over Cascadia-rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC over the weekend, the Timbers have captured points from three of their last five games to remain in the chase for the postseason.
The Timbers and Chivas USA (7-8-10, 31pts) square off for a third time in 2011. After knocking Chivas USA out of U.S. Open Cup qualifying back in March, the Timbers sustained a 1-0 road loss in regular-season play to Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center on June 4. Wednesday's match is the final meeting in the regular-season series between the two clubs. On a three-match unbeaten streak, Chivas USA is 2-1-2 in its last five matches.
Portland closes out a stretch of five games in 14 days on Saturday against D.C. United (7-7-10, 31pts). The Timbers and D.C. United met previously this season on May 29 at JELD-WEN Field. With two goals in the second half, United snapped Portland's five-game, home-winning streak to open the season with a 3-2 win. Saturday's fixture is the third in a series of five straight road games against Eastern Conference clubs for the Timbers.
With seven league games during the month of August, the Timbers have a two-week break between Saturday's match against D.C. United and the club's following match on Saturday, Sept. 10, on the road against the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park.
Timbers to wear 'Rose City red' kits Saturday in nation's capitol
The Timbers' "Rose City red" kits make their second appearance away from JELD-WEN Field on Saturday when the Timbers wear their secondary strips against D.C. United. Saturday's match will mark the fourth time this season - home or away - in which the Timbers have worn their "Rose City" kits in regular-season play.
The "Rose City" jersey features a split design of two shades of red, separated by "Rose City" thorns repeated down the middle, and Alaska Airlines script across the chest. Highlights of the jersey include "Rose City" verbiage on the back of the neck and the Rose City logo prominently displayed opposite the team's primary crest on the front of the jersey.
Fans can purchase "Rose City" red kits, as well as other items in the "Rose City" apparel line, at the adidas Timbers Team Store at JELD-WEN Field in downtown Portland or online at shop.portlandtimbers.com.
Timbers unveil the two custom captain's armband contest winners
The Timbers today unveiled the designs of two fan-created, Timbers-branded captain's armbands to be worn by captain Jack Jewsbury for the rest of the 2011 season. The two new custom armbands - one to be worn with the primary green kits and one with the secondary "Rose City red" kits - were designed by fans Brent Diskin and Holly Duthie. The winning designs were submitted through a special contest held by the club.
The armband designed for the primary green kit will make its debut Wednesday as the Timbers take on Chivas USA. The armband that corresponds to the "Rose City red" kit will be worn on Saturday against D.C. United when the Timbers wear their secondary uniforms.
Rose & Thistle Pub to host official viewing party for Saturday's road match
Fans are invited to join the Timbers' official viewing party Saturday at the Rose & Thistle Pub in Portland to watch the club take on D.C. United at 4:30 p.m. (PT), presented by ROOT SPORTS and Budweiser. Saturday's viewing party is open to fans ages 21 and older.
The Rose & Thistle Pub, located at 2314 Northeast Broadway Street in Portland, is one of several local pubs and restaurants featured with the club's pub partner program in 2011.
