MONTERREY, Mexico - Alvaro Fernandez scored the first-half winner and Terry Boss earned a clean sheet as Seattle Sounders FC beat reigning champions CF Monterrey, 1-0, in the second round of the CONCACAF Champions League group stage on Tuesday night at Estadio Tecnologico.
Sounders FC (2-0-0, 6 points in CCL) became the second MLS club to win a competitive match in Mexico and sit in first place of Group D.
U.S. soccer teams are now 2-44-4 on Mexican soil (MLS clubs are 2-21-3 and U.S. National Team is 0-23-1.
Monterrey (1-1-0, 3 points in CCL) saw its 13-game CCL unbeaten streak snapped.
Fernandez scored the game's lone goal in the 38th minute. After Seattle's defense cleared a dangerous sequence from Los Rayados, the midfield combined to bring the ball to Servando Carrasco in the attacking third. Carrasco played a ball to Pat Noonan who slipped a through ball to Fernandez in the box. Fernandez took one touch and finished to the upper corner.
Fernandez co-leads the team with two goals in CCL this year and leads all players with eight goals in all competitions.
Carrasco played in his first competitive match in his native Mexico since his youth.
Sounders FC held strong throughout the second half as Monterrey tested Seattle's defense. Boss came up with several key stops in the final 45 minutes to preserve the victory.
Three minutes into the second half Humberto Suazo played a ball to Aldo De Nigris in the box. De Nigris' sliding attempt in front of goal was saved by Boss.
Boss came up big again when he jumped off his line in the 58th minute to stop another attempt from De Nigris. Boss slid out and got his foot out to block De Nigris' shot.
In the 66th minute, De Nigris pressured Boss on a back pass and stole the ball in the box. De Nigris found Suazo in the middle of the box but his attempt from 6-yards went wide.
Despite the pressure from Monterrey's offense, Sounders FC found some space on the counterattack.
Leo Gonzalez played a great ball to Osvaldo Alonso in the 79th minute. Alonso took a first touch to get around the defense and then tried to slide the ball around the keeper but it rolled across the end line.
Sounders FC had an early opportunity in the 11th minute when Pat Noonan got on the end of a Tyson Wahl cross. Noonan's header was saved by Jonathan Orozco.
Recent signee Amadou Sanyang made his Sounders FC debut, entering for Roger Levesque in the 84th minute.
Sounders FC (12-5-9, 45 points in MLS) returns home for a three-game MLS home stand, which starts on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. PT against the Columbus Crew. KONG 6/16 will show the match live from the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field.
