Portland Timbers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers conceded a goal in each half - including a late penalty kick - in a 2-0 loss against MLS-expansion side Orlando City SC in front of sellout crowd of 21,144 fans at Providence Park on Sunday afternoon. The loss, Portland's first home loss of the season, ended the team's home unbeaten run at seven consecutive matches, dating back to last season.

Despite finishing with an 18-14 advantage in shots, including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal, the Timbers (1-2-3, 6pts) conceded the opening goal in the 30th minute as Orlando City forward Cyle Larin chested in a sharp cross from forward Kevin Molino for the opening goal. Orlando City (2-2-2, 8pts) was awarded a penalty kick in the 85th minute. While the initial penalty kick attempt by Orlando City midfielder Kaká was saved by Timbers goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey, the referee whistled for a re-kick due to encroachment in the penalty box by a Timbers player. Kaká converted his second try, doubling Orlando City's lead late in the match.

On Sunday, Portland attempted more than 500 passes for the second time in its last three matches, leading to an 84-percent passing accuracy against Orlando City, but saw a season-high eight shots blocked. Forward Fanendo Adi attempted a team-high six shots, four of which were blocked.

Early in the match, Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe saw a low, hard shot off a counterattack parried away by Orlando City goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts in the 17th minute. Forward Maximiliano Urruti hit the side netting with his rebound attempt. Looking for the equalizer in the 71st minute, Timbers midfielder Dairon Asprilla forced Ricketts to make a diving save as Asprilla fired a one-time effort looking for the far left post following a pass from Nagbe.

The Timbers take to the road for a nationally televised match against MLS expansion side New York City FC on Sunday, April 19, at Yankee Stadium in New York City; kickoff is set for 4 p.m. (Pacific). Sunday's match will be nationally televised on FOX Sports 1 with a local radio broadcast on 750/102.9 The Game and in Spanish on 93.5 FM.
