Timbers Earn Away Point with 0-0 Draw against Red Bulls

July 10, 2016 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Portland Timbers News Release

HARRISON, N.J. - The Portland Timbers earned an away point in a 0-0 draw against the New York Red Bulls before 19,985 fans at Red Bull Arena on Sunday night, extending their unbeaten run to seven games in league play while recording their second straight shutout.

Producing eight shots in the match, the Timbers (6-6-7, 25pts) threatened early in the game when midfielder Lucas Melano forced a strong save from New York (7-9-3, 24pts) goalkeeper Luis Robles in the 10th minute of play, hitting a powerful volley from the left side of the 18-yard box. Continuing to create chances on goal in the first half, midfielder Darlington Nagbe struck an effort from distance in the 25th minute, resulting in another save from Robles. Five minutes later, Nagbe came close to setting up forward Fanendo Adi for a finish while breaking on the counter attack, but the Red Bulls defense managed to cut out the danger.

Portland created its strongest chance of the game in the 55th minute when midfielder Ned Grabavoy found midfielder Ben Zemanski, setting up a well-struck volley that rattled off the crossbar. Five minutes later, Nagbe floated a cross into the box finding defender Nat Borchers, who headed the ball back across the face of goal. Melano pounced on the bouncing ball inside the area, hitting his final effort just wide of the target.

With the Timbers pressing forward late in the game, Zemanski fired another powerful attempt from the edge of the box in the 78th minute, hitting it just high of the target, while defender Zarek Valentin followed up two minutes later with a low, driven chance that was saved Robles at the near post.

On the defensive end, goalkeeper Jake Gleeson made four saves, marking his fourth straight game with at least four saves. After denying Felipe's powerful free kick from distance in the 17th minute, Gleeson came up big in the final moments of the game, reacting quickly to parry Felipe's close-range strike from the edge of the six-yard box in the 78th minute.

Next up, the Timbers return to Providence Park to face the Montreal Impact on Wednesday, July 13, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific). Wednesday's match will feature a local broadcast on ROOT SPORTS with local radio broadcasts on 750 AM/102.9 FM The Game (English) and La GranD 1150 AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).

Notes:

* With the clean sheet, the Timbers have recorded shutouts in back-to-back road matches for the third time in the team's MLS history. The other two occurrences happened between Aug. 2-Aug. 16, 2015 and between Oct. 25, 2014-March 21, 2015.

* Since 2013, Portland has recorded 38 shutouts, marking the second-most shutouts by an MLS team during that timespan, behind only Sporting Kansas City.

* The Timbers moved their unbeaten streak to seven games, which is the second-longest active undefeated streak in MLS. The streak is also the longest regular-season unbeaten run produced by Portland since a 10-game unbeaten streak between the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

* Portland won 67.9 percent of the duels in the match, winning 74 out of 109 duels. The 74 duels won is the second-most by the Timbers in an MLS match, trailing its previous mark of 77 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Aug. 25, 2015.

* The 74 duels won by the Timbers are the second-most by any MLS team in a match this season, behind the Colorado Rapids' 80 duels won against D.C. United on March 20, 2016.

* Goalkeeper Jake Gleeson recorded four saves in the match, moving his season total to 59, the fifth-most in MLS in 2016.

* Midfielder Ned Grabavoy was introduced into the match in the fourth minute of the match as an injury substitution. Grabavoy's substitution marks the earliest substitution the Timbers have ever made in an MLS match.

* Defender Alvas Powell played his 60th regular-season match with the Timbers.
