Real Salt Lake Comes Back for a Draw against Montreal

July 10, 2016 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Real Salt Lake News Release

REAL SALT LAKE COMES BACK FOR A DRAW AGAINST MONTREAL After Trailing 1-0 in the First Half, FW Yura Movsisyan Scored His Seventh Goal of the Season in a 1-1 Draw at Rio Tinto Stadium SANDY, Utah (Saturday, July 9, 2016) - Real Salt Lake remained unbeaten at Rio Tinto Stadium in 2016, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Montreal Impact after coming from a 1-0 first-half deficit to earn a point at home. FW Yura Movsisyan scored his seventh goal of the season and GK Nick Rimando finished with four saves on the night as RSL moved to 8-5-5 (29 points) on the season and 5-0-3 at home.

Montreal pounced on Salt Lake early, Harry Shipp scoring his first goal of the season for the 1-0 advantage.

In the eighth minute, Laurent Ciman shot from distance off a free kick. Rimando knocked the ball down for the save, but Shipp beat DF Justen Glad to the rebound and put it into the net for the advantageous goal.

Real Salt Lake was outshot 9-3 in the first half, all three shots coming from Movsisyan as RSL struggled to break down the compact defense of the Impact despite holding 60% of the possession.

That turned around to start the second half, as RSL got three shots in the first seven minutes and had its best opportunity snuffed out by a sliding Evan Bush. The ball was played behind Montreal's defense for Movsisyan and he held it up in the corner of the box, then played it across the edge of the six for FW Joao Plata, but Montreal's goalkeeper slid off his line to beat him to it and get the clearance before RSL could get a shot.

That aggressive attack paid off in the 78th minute as DF Demar Phillips fought off two defenders to keep the ball in play at the endline, then played it to Plata going into the box. Plata was taken down from behind by Calum Mallace and referee Ricardo Salazar pointed to the spot for the penalty.

Movsisyan powered the PK past Bush for his seventh goal of the season and RSL found its equalizer.

Late in stoppage time, Real Salt Lake had two opportunities for game-winners when MF Kyle Beckerman ran on a shot from outside the box that forced Bush to parry it away for a corner and MF Javier Morales had his attempt from the edge of the 18 missed wide and RSL settled for the draw.

RSL will have a quick turnaround before heading north of the border to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday at BC Place, then will return home to host the New England Revolution Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.

GAME NOTES - RSLvMTL

DF Jamison Olave was originally in the starting lineup, but was a late scratch after experiencing muscle tightness in warmups. DF Justen Glad replaced him in the starting lineup. MF Kyle Beckerman will miss RSL's match on Wednesday while serving a one-match suspension for yellow card accumulation. GK Nick Rimando remains one win behind Kevin Hartman for the all-time MLS lead. Rimando is at 179 in his career, while Hartman has 180. RSL MF Sunday Stephen missed the match due to injury after he underwent successful surgery to repair a fractured orbital suffered on June 22 against the New York Red Bulls. He is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. With his first-half yellow card last week against D.C. United, DF Tony Beltran served a one-match suspension for yellow card accumulation on Saturday against Montreal.
