Timbers, Club América Battle to 1-1 Draw in Leg One Quarterfinal Match of Concacaf Champions League at Providence Park

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers earned a 1-1 draw against Club América in the first leg of the quarterfinals in the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League at Providence Park on Wednesday night. Portland battled back from a 1-0 deficit as Felipe Mora converted from the penalty spot in the 97th minute to secure a draw.

The two teams will square off in the second leg on Wednesday, May 5, at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico. The May 5 match kicks off at 7:15 p.m. (Pacific) and will be broadcast on FS1. The winner will advance to the semifinals to take on either Atlanta United FC or the Philadelphia Union.

Mora Goals

Mora tallied his second goal for Portland in the 2021 CCL tournament. His two goals are tied for the fifth-most by a Timbers player in CCL play. Notably, he is one of seven players in club history to register multiple goals in the CCL.

Timbers In CCL Play

With a draw, the Timbers improved to 4-0-2 in six all-time matches played at home in CCL play, outscoring their opponents 19-5. In 11 CCL matches, Portland is 6-2-3 since the club made its first appearance in 2014. In the 2021 edition of the tournament, the Timbers are 1-0-2 in their three matches, outscoring their opponents 8-3.

Goal-Scoring Plays

AME - Roger Martínez (penalty kick), 45+1: After the Timbers were whistled for a foul inside the box, Roger Martínez stepped to the penalty spot and converted the attempt.

POR - Felipe Mora (penalty kick), 90+7: Marvin Loria's close-range attempt was blocked and Club América was whistled for a handball in the box. From the spot, Felipe Mora delivered a strike into the back of the net.

Notes

Felipe Mora scored the game-tying goal in the 97th minute of the match. Mora has scored two goals in the 2021 Concacaf Champions League.

Renzo Zambrano made his debut in the competition.

The Timbers remain unbeaten at home all-time in the competition with a record of 5-0-2. Portland is 6-2-3 all-time in CCL play.

Portland is undefeated in three CCL matches (1-0-2) in 2021.

The match marked the Timbers first appearance in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.

Club América is the first team from Mexico that the Timbers have faced in a competitive match.
