May 16, 2024 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Playing their second match in a four-day span, the Portland Timbers carved out a 4-2 comeback victory over the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park on Wednesday evening. Despite a 2-0 score line at halftime, the Timbers banked four second-half goals from Jonathan Rodríguez (2), Felipe Mora and Evander to secure three points at home.
Comeback Results
Tonight's comeback victory marked the Timbers' second-ever win after trailing by a 2-0 deficit or more, and the first time since they earned a 3-2 result against Houston Dynamo FC on June 26, 2016. Portland is also the first MLS team to score four or more unanswered goals after trailing by 2-0 or more since March 31, 2018 (LA Galaxy 4, LAFC 3). It also marked the Timbers' third comeback result of the season after overcoming a 3-0 deficit to draw 3-3 at Sporting Kansas City (April 7) and turning around a 1-0 score line to a 2-1 win at NYCFC (March 9).
Men of the Match
Evander recorded his fifth goal and fifth assist of the season. The Brazilian midfielder has registered four goals and four assists in his last six appearances for the Timbers. Felipe Mora also scored his fifth goal of the season, tied for the team lead with Evander. The 30-year-old striker has scored in back-to-back matches for Portland after tallying a goal against Seattle (May 12). Forward Jonathan Rodríguez notched a brace tonight, bringing his season total to four goals. Rodríguez's brace came as the 57th in club history. Santiago Moreno tallied his team-leading sixth assist of the 2024 campaign, while Kamal Miller recorded his first career assist for Portland, becoming the 12th player on the team to earn an assist this year.

SJ - Hernán López, 34th minute: Applying heavy pressure, Hernán López won the ball at midfield and raced into the Earthquakes' attacking half before lobbing a shot from outside the box that found the back of the net.
POR- Evander (penalty kick), 74th minute: Portland was awarded a penalty kick after San Jose defender Bruno Wilson was called for a handball in the box. Evander stepped up and buried the spot-kick with his right foot.
POR- Jonathan Rodríguez (Evander, Kamal Miller), 80th minute: Kamal Miller split the Earthquakes' lines with a precise pass to Evander at the top left side of the box. The Brazilian held the ball up before finding Jonathan Rodríguez, whose first touch took him across the box and set up a shot with his right foot that found the lower left corner of the net.
POR- Felipe Mora (penalty kick), 90th minute: Felipe Mora stepped to the spot after VAR awarded the Timbers a penalty kick following a collision in the box between William Yarbrough and Jonathan Rodríguez. Mora struck a powerful shot with his right foot down the middle and into the roof of the net to give Portland the lead.
POR- Jonathan Rodríguez (Santiago Moreno), 90+10 minute: On a counterattack, Santiago Moreno found Jonathan Rodríguez running into space on the left side of the field. Rodríguez received the ball in stride and used his right foot to slot the ball past William Yarbrough.
