Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Edmonton, AB - A hat-trick performance from Gavin McKenna along with multi-point games from Oasiz Wiesblatt, Tomas Mrsic, Hunter St. Martin, Vasyl Spilka, Reid Andresen, Tyler MacKenzie & Andrew Basha were all in part of the Medicine Hat Tigers 9-7 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings Monday afternoon.

The Tigers would get started early in the first as Gavin McKenna (Whitehorse, YT) would wire home his 26th of the season at 1:04 from Oasiz Wiesblatt (Calgary, AB) and it's 1-0 Tigers. Medicine Hat would continue to push the paces with a power play at 8:04 and Tomas Mrsic (Surrey, BC) would one-time his 16th of the season past Oil Kings goaltender Kolby Hay. Andrew Basha (Calgary, AB) & Oasiz Wiesblatt would draw assists.

Edmonton would create a little uncertainty on a Tigers penalty kill as Blake Fiddler would bat in his 4th of the season after a long video review to get the Oil Kings within one at 14:53 after an initial no-goal call on the ice. Medicine Hat would get a power play shortly after but a miss on the break-out would benefit on a short-handed breakaway and Marshall Finnie would beat Zach Zahara (Rockyview, AB) and tie the game at 2-2 at 18:49.

Not to be out-done the Tigers would take a 3-2 lead into the second as 49 seconds later at 19:38. Hunter St. Martin (Edmonton, AB) would will the puck through Kolby Hay's arm from Tyler MacKenzie (Red Deer, AB) & Reid Andresen (Saskatoon, SK) would assist on the goal.

Into the second period it was an early tie as Joe Iginla would score his 2nd career WHL goal on a 5 on 3 power play at 2:19 to make it 3-3. But the Tigers just 18 seconds later, Gavin McKenna would notch his second of the game from Oasiz Wiesblatt to give the Tigers the lead again at 4-3. The Tigers keep coming at 8:42 as Andrew Basha (Calgary, AB) would beat Hay to make it 5-3 Tigers. Andresen and Mrsic would assist on the 5th Tiger goal. Vasyl Spilka (Liberec, CZE) would then get on the scoresheet with two consecutive goals at 9:03 and 12:14 from St. Martin twice along with Kadon McCann (Cochrane, AB) & Bogdans Hodass (Jelgava, LAT). The Tigers wouldn't be done as Gavin McKenna would get a break-away and beat relief goaltender Hudson Perry for his second hat-trick of the season and his now team leading 28th of the season just 58 seconds after Vasyl Spilka's second goal to make it 8-3 Tigers.

Edmonton would respond on another power play as Iginla would notch his second of the period at 14:45 and the seven goal period would come to a close with the Tigers up 8-4.

Into the third period, the Oil Kings would make some early noise at 6:06 when Gracyn Sawchyn would back-hand his 14th of the season to cut the Tiger lead to 8-5.

Oasiz Wiesblatt would then counter for the Tigers just sneaking the puck over the line past Hudson Perry at 10:10 from McKenna & Andresen to make it 9-6 Tigers.

Late in the game Edmonton would close out the scoring as Marshall Finnie on another Oil King power play would make it close at 9-7 with 53 second left. But the Tigers would come away with their 5th straight win of the season against Edmonton and now move to 33-17-4-2 on the season.

Next up for Medicine Hat, a home-at-home series with the Swift Current Broncos starting Friday night in Swift Current before returning home Saturday night to close out the pair of games against their Central Division rivals.
