Tigers Get the Best of the ICE, 4-1

January 9, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release

The Winnipeg ICE faced off against the Medicine Hat Tigers Wednesday evening, hoping to get back into the win column after losing at home against the Prince Albert Raiders last Sunday by a 6-3 score.

The ICE struck for the game's opening goal 4:38 into the contest on the power play, as Jackson Leppard put away the rebound from a Michal Teply one-timer. The assist gave Teply his first point since returning from the World Junior Championships with Czech Republic. The ICE took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The shots were 15-10 in favor of the ICE in the period.

The majority of the second period was scoreless, but Medicine Hat found the net twice in a span of 22 seconds late in the frame to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Lukas Svejkovsky and Jonathan Brinkman scored the goals for the Tigers at 16:49 and 17:11. Shots after two periods were 29-27 in favor of the ICE.

The first half of the third period went by without many chances for either side. Teply did get two glorious in-tight chances to tie the game at two apiece with about seven minutes left, but Garin Bjorklund was up to the task in the blue paint.

Those two saves would prove pivotal, as the Tigers' Lukas Svejkovsky put home a James Hamblin pass to complete a transition play with 4:25 left on the clock, doubling his team's lead. 25 seconds later, the Tigers grabbed another goal to put the game away when Cole Sillinger streaked up the middle of the ice and put a shot through Liam Hughes' five-hole.

With the loss, the ICE dropped to 24-15-1-0, while the Tigers improved to 26-12-1-1 with the victory.

The third star was Hughes, with the Tigers' Svejovsky and Bjorklund were selected second and first stars, respectively. ICE fans flocked to the rink despite the snowy and windy weather: attendance was 1,621, yet another sellout.

The ICE are back in action at the ICE Cave on Saturday, Jan. 11 when they take on the Red Deer Rebels on Peyton Krebs Mini Bobblehead night. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
