Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - The Highway 3 Rivalry would close another chapter between the Lethbridge Hurricanes & Medicine Hat Tigers and for the second straight overtime would be needed in a 4-3 Hurricane win in Medicine Hat Saturday night.
The Tigers would open the festivities early at 1:45 with 4840 in attendance as Gavin McKenna (Whitehorse, YT) would open the scoring with his 33rd of the season unassisted, with the goal McKenna would tie Al Conroy's franchise record for points by a 16-year-old with 95. 1-0 Tigers. The Hurricanes would counter on a Tiger power play as Carter Dereniwsky would beat Tigers goaltender Zach Zahara (Rockyview, AB) at 10:54 and it's all square at 2-2. Medicine Hat would regain the lead as Oasiz Wiesblatt (Calgary, AB) would backhand a net front battle past Brady Smith for his career tying 26th of the season at 16:07. McKenna & Hunter St. Martin (Edmonton, AB) 2-1 Tigers. McKenna moves into the record books as the highest scoring 16-year-old in franchise history. But that lead would be short lived as Dylan Sydor with 49 seconds left in the period would re-direct his 28th of the season to tie things up at 2-2, keeping that score to the second period.
In the middle frame, the Tigers would regain the lead on the power play as McKenna would have his 34th of the season and 97th point of the campaign from Tomas Mrsic (Surrey, BC) & Andrew Basha (Calgary, AB) at 6:09 it's 3-2 home-side. But on a following power play for Lethbridge, Sydor would one-time his second of the night at 8:28 and it's 3-3 going to the third period.
Both teams would go back and forth in the third period but no one could get a regulation win and the Tigers & Hurricanes would go to overtime for the second straight night.
The Tigers would start off the overtime period on a 4-on-3 power play but couldn't solve Brady Smith and the Hurricanes would counter shortly after as Tristan Doyle would go to the net and take a feed from Miguel Marques beating Zach Zahara and giving the Hurricanes the extra point in the final game of the 2023-2024 Regular Season.
