Tiger-Cats Announce Trade With Eskimos

Hamilton Tiger-Cats News Release

Hamilton, Ontario -- The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that the team has traded defensive end Joe Montford to the Edmonton Eskimos in exchange for offensive lineman Dan Comiskey.

"Joe was an unbelievable player for the team, and an unbelievable person for the city of Hamilton," said Tiger-Cats head coach Greg Marshall. "We wish Joe all the best in Edmonton and do not look forward to playing against him."

Montford, second-all time on the Tiger-Cats career sack list (115), played 141 games with the Black and Gold over eight seasons. The Beauford, North Carolina native has recorded 550 total tackles (52 for a loss), 30 forced fumbles, and 124 quarterback sacks in his ten-year CFL career which also saw stops in Shreveport (1995) and Toronto (2002).

"You always hope a player who has had such an outstanding career with one team can finish his career where he started. Joe Montford had a great career both on and off the field and will always be a fan favourite in Hamilton," said Ticats general manager Ron Lancaster. "Joe had decided to play out his option year this season, so when we were given the opportunity to obtain a player of Dan Comiskey's ability and were ensured that we wouldn't lose Joe for nothing, we were excited."

"Dan is one of the finest Canadian offensive lineman in the league and Joe is one of the all-time great pass rushers in this league, so it's a good trade for both teams. We are excited to get a player of Dan's ability but it's difficult to lose a player like Joe," Lancaster continued.

Comiskey, a non-import offensive lineman from Windsor, Ontario, started all 54 regular season games, two playoff games and two Grey Cup games during his three seasons in Edmonton (2002-2004). Comiskey has been recognized as a CFL West Division All-Star (2003), a CFLPA All-Star (2004, 2003) and was the Eskimos' nominee for the CFL's Tom Pate Award in 2003. Originally selected in the fifth round (42nd overall) in the 1997 CFL Canadian College Draft by Saskatchewan, Comiskey played 68 games over five seasons for the Roughriders before being traded to the Eskimos prior to the 2002 season.

In his senior year at Windsor, Dan was the schools' nominee for the Most Outstanding Male Athlete. He was a unanimous First Team All-Canadian and OUAA All-Star and was named Windsor's lineman of the year. Off of the field, Comiskey took an active role in the Edmonton community, serving as a honourary chairperson for the Canadian Cancer Society and represented the Eskimos as a Stay in School speaker.
