Colorado Rapids News Release
Foxborough, MA (05-28-05) -The Colorado Rapids earned a point on the road tonight against the undefeated New England Revolution in a 0-0 tie at Gillette Stadium.
The first opportunity of the night came in the seventh minute when Jeff Cunningham was sent through on an accurate pass by midfielder Eric Denton. The former Columbus Crew defender placed a ball into the backs of the Revolution defenders that left Cunningham running on a one-on-one situation against goalkeeper Matt Reis. The Revs goalie came quick off his line to take the ball from the feet of the onrushing Cunningham before the striker was able to take control of it. Revs midfielder Andy Dorman had two scoring opportunities for the home team in a two minute span. The first one in the 28th minute, was denied by a sliding Nat Borchers, while the second opportunity was denied by a spectacular save from goalkeeper Joe Cannon from just two yards out.
Both goalkeepers came up big for their respective teams in the 48th minute to keep the scoreless tie. Reis pulled an acrobatic save when he pushed a powerful shot by Kyle Beckerman to the crossbar. The ball bounced back into the direction of Reis, who easily collected it to clear the danger.
Cannon had to stretch his entire 6-2 frame to avoid Jose Cancela's 30-yard shot from sneaking into the upper left corner of his goal.
The Rapids goalkeeper was called upon again in the 62nd minute when he denied Taylor Twellman and Pat Noonan, both from close range. Twellman dribbled his way past defender Ricky Lewis before unleashing a shot from two yards out that was blocked by Cannon, who came off his line. The rebound landed in the path of Noonan, whose shot was deflected by Cannon to maintain the tie.
The Rapids played with 10 men from the 80th minute on after former Boston College standout, Guy Mellamed, saw his second yellow card followed by a red one. The Israeli international will miss the next Rapids regular season game.
The Rapids will have a bye weekend on June 4th before returning to MLS regular season action on Saturday, June 11th against the Columbus Crew in a game that will be broadcast live from Crew Stadium at 2:00 p.m. (MT) on ESPN2.
