Gwinnett plated seven early runs off Chris George and cruised to a 7-1 win over the Tides Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
Gwinnett jumped on George (0-1) early, plating three runs in the second and four more in the third. Joey Terdoslavich belted a two-run homer in the third, while Josh Wilson added an RBI single and an RBI double to give the Braves an early 7-0 advantage.
In his first appearance of the season, George allowed seven runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings while walking one and striking out two.
Gwinnett starter Todd Redmond (1-0) turned in a solid effort to record his first win of the season. Redmond yielded four hits and two walks while striking out seven, throwing 58 of his 88 pitches for strikes.
Norfolk plated its only run in the fifth frame, as Matt Antonelli singled and scored on a double by catcher Chris Robinson.
Norfolk's bullpen turned in a strong effort, as Oscar Villarreal, Miguel Socolovich and Pat Neshek combined to toss 5.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, two walks and one hit allowed.
The Tides will wrap up their set with Gwinnett Wednesday afternoon in the first Business Special of the 2012 season. Brad Bergesen (0-1, 12.46) will take the hill for the Tides against Braves right-hander Erik Cordier (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 12:15.
