SWB Yankees Game with Syracuse Suspended

April 10, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the steady rains that fell at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse caused the suspension of the final game of a four game series with the Syracuse Chiefs Tuesday night.

Ramon Ortiz, the 38 year veteran right hander, who has signed with the Yankees earlier in the afternoon, was sharp in his Scranton/Wilkes-Barre debut limiting the Chiefs to just one hit in 4.0 innings, a third inning lead off single by Mark Teahen. The right hander struck out five and walked two on 59 pitches before his night ended with the suspension.

The Yankees grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning picking up a pair of unearned runs off Syracuse starter Mitch Atkins. Dewayne Wise worked a leadoff walk and moved to third base on another miscue by the Syracuse outfield. Chiefs' outfielder's committed three errors in Monday's 6-5 win over the Yankees and once again had issues making a routine play on Tuesday night. Brandon Laird's fly ball to left was dropped by left fielder Corey Brown for a two base error and the Yankees had runners at second and third with none out. Colin Curtis got home Wise with a sacrifice fly to right field and with two down in the inning, Doug Bernier doubled past Brown in left center scoring Laird to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Yankees and Chiefs will pick up Tuesday's game in the top of the fifth inning on Saturday at Alliance Bank Stadium and will play the game to its conclusion before playing the regularly scheduled game, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's "home" opener which will now be a seven inning game.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre opens up a three game series Wednesday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo with a 2:05 PM first pitch against the Bisons. Right hander Dellin Betances (0-0, 3.60 ERA) makes his second start of the season for the Yankees, while the Bisons will counter with right hander Jeurys Familia (0-0, 1.93 ERA).
