Tides Pick Up a Win
September 3, 2009 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
A three-run first inning powered Norfolk to a 3-2 win over the Gwinnett Braves on a misty Thursday night at Harbor Park.
The Tides plated all the runs they would need in the decisive frame, as Norfolk jumped out to an early lead off of veteran southpaw John Halama (4-7). Rhyne Hughes put the Tides on the board with a two-run homer and Guillermo Rodriguez later followed with an RBI double that gave Norfolk a 3-0 advantage.
Gwinnett struck back for two runs in the third off of Tides starter Chris Lambert (7-9), but Lambert and three relievers combined to hold the Braves scoreless over the final six frames. Lambert struck out four without walking a batter over five innings as he earned his first win in a Norfolk uniform.
Jim Miller worked around a one out walk in a scoreless ninth inning to register his 17th save of the season.
Ambiorix Concepcion and Melvin Dorta each had two hits for Norfolk, which has now won three straight games.
Norfolk will conclude the home portion of its schedule on Friday night, with a postgame fireworks show to take place after the 7:15 contest. The Tides will send Jake Arrieta (5-7, 3.92) to the mound against right-hander Bobby Brownlie (4-2, 4.26).
