Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- After seven scoreless innings the Louisville Bats plated four runs in the top of the eighth, including a two-run pinch-hit double by outfielder Daniel Dorn, to comeback and defeat the Indianapolis Indians 4-2 at Victory Field on Thursday night.
With the loss the Indians fall to 69-70 overall and 36-34 at home, while the Bats improve to 81-57 overall and 37-31 on the road with the win. The victory for Louisville gives them current 1-0 series lead as well as the season series advantage at 12-6.
After being held scoreless with just five hits through the first seven innings, the Bats finally broke through with four runs in the top of the eighth. C Chris Denove led off the frame with a walk before the next two hitters LF Luis Bolivar and RF Michael Griffin reached on defensive miscues during at-bats where each was trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt.
With the bases loaded, pinch-hitter Daniel Dorn ripped a ground-rule double down the right field line to put the Bats on the board with a two-run lead. The two-bagger scored Denove and Bolivar, while Griffin came plateward on a wild pitch that glanced off of the home plate umpire's leg.
Dorn would then extend Louisville's lead 4-1 when he trotted home on a single by 3B Juan Francisco to cap off the inning. Francisco (2-for-4, 1 RBI) collected the only multi-hit performance for the Bats on the evening and continues to dominate Tribe pitching with a .433 average (13-for-30) and 10 RBI in seven games against the Indians this season.
Indianapolis jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning sparked by CF Brian Bixler, who led off the frame with a single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by 2B Pedro Lopez. RF Jose Tabata then brought Bixler home with an RBI double to right-center field to give the Indians an early 1-0 lead.
Louisville battled back with their outburst in the top half of the eighth, but the Indians attempted a comeback of their own in the bottom half. C Erik Kratz walked with one-out and then stole second for his seventh theft of the season. With his seven steals, the International League Postseason All-Star has now surpassed his career stolen base total (six) coming into this season and also leads all catchers in the Pirates' organization in thefts so far this year.
After moving himself into scoring position with the steal, Kratz came plateward on a single by 3B Robinzon Diaz to pull the Tribe to within two. It would not be enough, however, as Bats' closer Logan Ondrusek (1.0 IP) closed the door on the Indians with a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his 11th save of the season.
Ondrusek continued Louisville's dominance on the mound as he followed starter Travis Wood (5.0 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO), RHP Federico Baez (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 SO) and RHP Jeff Kennard (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB) who allowed just two runs in eight combined innings. Wood received a no decision after he struck out six and gave up one run on seven hits in five innings, while Baez earned the win with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief.
Tribe starter Ty Taubenheim (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO) did not record a decision, but was excellent in his start as he gave up just three hits and struck out three in five scoreless innings of work. The right hander has now allowed just two earned runs over 15.1 innings for a 1.16 ERA in his last three starts for the Indians.
RHP Jeff Karstens (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 SO), who is on Major League rehab from the Pirates, replaced Taubenheim and struck out one, while allowing just one base knock in two scoreless frames for his first hold of the season. However, RHP Jorge Julio (2.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) was pinned with the loss to drop to 0-2 after he gave up all four Louisville runs on three hits in two innings out of the bullpen.
Louisville collected only one multi-hit performance on the night, while Tribe picked up multiple hits from Tabata (2-for-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI), Diaz (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and 1B Hector Gimenez (2-for-4). With Tabata's double in the first the Indians have now recorded an extra-base hit in 55 straight games and have only failed to collect an extra-base hit in just three contests this season.
Indianapolis continues their final home series of the year against division rival Louisville on Friday at 7:15 p.m. LHP Bobby Livingston is scheduled to make his Indians' debut, while LHP Ben Jukich is expected to get the nod for the Bats.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:55 p.m
