Norfolk Tides News Release
The Charlotte Knights plated seven runs against the Tides bullpen as they rallied to knock off Norfolk 7-5 Thursday night at Harbor Park.
Tides starter Zach Britton was fantastic in his Triple-A debut, as he held Charlotte to just three hits in six shutout innings. Britton struck out four without walking a batter as he needed just 70 pitches to navigate six frames.
Over his last eight starts between Double-A Bowie and Norfolk, Britton is now 5-0 with a 0.85 ERA (5-ER, 52.2-IP).
Norfolk led 4-0 after six frames, but the Knights got to the Tides bullpen in the seventh. Josh Kroeger clubbed a two-run homer to get Charlotte on the board, and Luis Rodriguez later lined a two-out, two-run single to center field to knot the score at 4-4.
The Tides re-took the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a bases loaded walk to Nolan Reimold, but Charlotte rallied in the ninth against closer Dennis Sarfate (0-1).
After a leadoff strikeout, Sarfate issued two walks and a single to load the bases, and Rodriguez followed with a single into right field. Fernando Cortez and Brent Morel scored on the single, and Alejandro de Aza also came in to score all the way from first base after Rodriguez stayed hung up in a rundown between first and second base.
Norfolk brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth against Charlotte closer Ryan Braun, but Morel made an exceptional diving stop at third base on a grounder by Blake Davis to end the threat and give Charlotte its second straight win in the series.
Jeff Salazar led Norfolk's offense with two hits and two runs batted in, as he and Rhyne Hughes each belted solo home runs. Robert Andino added two singles and a run scored.
Former Tide Greg Aquino (1-3) earned the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The Tides and Knights will continue their series Friday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7:15. Zach Clark (0-2, 3.09) will take the mound for Norfolk against Charlotte right-hander Jeff Marquez (6-4, 4.24).
On Friday, there will be a postgame fireworks extravaganza presented by USO Banking, only at Bank of America. There will also be a pregame ceremony as the U.S. Postal Service unveils a special edition stamp honoring the Negro Leagues. The Tides and Knights will also wear replica Negro League uniforms in the contest.
