Carolina Thunderbirds News Release

The Carolina Thunderbirds remain atop the FHL Standings after a pair of regulation wins against the Elmira Enforcers this weekend. The team's record now stands at 4-0-0-0 for 12 points (perfect 100% points percentage). The team welcomes in the Danville Dashers (3-1-0-0, 11 points) Friday and Saturday night in an early season showdown between the top two teams in the league.

After the announcement of head coach Andre Niec's six-game suspension the Thunderbirds turned to interim head coach Karolina Huvarova who became the second woman ever (first European woman) to coach a men's professional hockey game on Friday and Saturday night. The team responded with a pair of wins 6-4 (Friday, Kelly Curl in net) and 3-1 (Saturday, Henry Dill in net). Carolina got big weekends from Jan Salak (2-3-5), Josh Pietrantonio (1-2-3), and Karel Drahorad (2-1-3) to keep the team perfect heading into the Danville weekend.

Looking ahead to Danville, the Thunderbirds will be without Jacob (JT) Walters after the team announced Monday afternoon that he had been traded to the Elmira Enforcers for future considerations. The Thunderbirds had a very crowded defenseman situation coming out of camp and have dressed 8 different defensemen in their first four games, including Walters.

Carolina and Danville played in a spirited season series last year. Out of 18 games played against each other the Thunderbirds came away on top with 10 wins, one of which came in a shootout.

The Dashers will be without Preston Kugler who has 3 games played in the FHL this season. Kugler was called up to the Evansville Thunderbolts of the SPHL last weekend.

Saturday night is Veterans night brought to you by Pierce Jefferson and Majic 99.9. On that night the team will be wearing special game jerseys that will be teased on social media this week (@CarolinaTBirds on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram). After the game on Saturday, the special game jerseys will be auctioned off to the highest bidder through the auction app LiveSource. LiveSource is free to download on all Android and iOS devices. Fans can bid from the comfort of their seats whether they are in the Annex, at home, or at their favorite establishment watching the games.

President/GM Scott Brand: "I was excited to see how the team responded given all that had happened leading up to last weekend. The way they stayed in their systems and even more importantly that they stayed away from extra curricular activities during the games was great to see and really helped us keep discipline to get the six points. With Karolina behind the bench the team seemed to rally off of her and among themselves and give the effort they needed to get the job done."
