Winnipeg product Keegan Kolesar had his first career Western Hockey League hat-trick, leading the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 7-2 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Tuesday night.
Seattle broke open a 1-1 game with three unanswered second period goals, and after Brandon had made it a 4-2 game early in the third, shut the Wheat Kings down including a pair of successful penalty-kills before scoring three times in the final 90 seconds of the third period to make the score more lopsided than the game actually was.
"Pushed much harder in the third, I thought. Made it 4-2, had two power-plays, had our goalie out," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ's post-game show, "Certainly the score, when all is said and done, is a lot different than what the game itself was but we didn't make it hard enough on Seattle tonight."
Mathew Barzal added five assists for the T-Birds, with the New York Islanders 2015 first round pick having four primary assists.
Reid Duke and Rihards Bukarts scored the goals for Brandon while Jordan Papirny made 29 saves in the Wheat Kings' net.
Brandon has now lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, falling to 8-3-0-2 on the year.
"We have a lot of guys that are thinking they're working hard but, in fact, I know can work harder," said McCrimmon, "I thought in the third period, we worked harder, I thought we did a lot of really good things in terms of our work ethic and trying to get back into the hockey game but you can't tell me we're working as hard as we can or as hard as we need to."
The Wheat Kings will try to put an end to their slide on Wednesday when they visit the Everett Silvertips (8:35 p.m., 880 CKLQ)

The next home game for the Wheat Kings isn't until next Friday when Brandon welcomes the visiting Victoria Royals. You can purchase your tickets to that game by calling the Keystone Box Office at 204-726-3555.
