
Thunder Win; Avoid Sweep

HARLINGEN, TEXAS-The Texas Thunder (15-29) avoided a sweep by defeating the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (22-22) 7-4 Sunday night at Harlingen field.
In the top of the fourth inning the Thunder broke a scoreless tie, Adam Humes scored on a fielder's choice giving the Thunder an early 1-0 lead.
RGV answered right back, Albert Carpen led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a bunt down the third baseline who later scored on a Kevin Lusson RBI single tying it at 1-1.
The Thunder then regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Jacinto Cipriota scored on a throwing error from Carpen breaking the tying giving the Thunder a 2-1 lead.
Tim Battle later scored on a sacrifice fly from Mario Mercedes making it 3-1.
The Thunder scored three more runs in the seventh inning grabbing a 6-1 lead. Tim Battle led the offensive charge, scoring Jacob Douglas on a RBI single. The Thunder would pace the Wings offense from there.
The Thunder would add one more run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly from Mario Mercedes scoring Cipriota from third making it a 7-1 lead.
RGV rallied back in the ninth inning with a two run RBI single from Carpen scoring Tyler Mclntyre and Kegio Miyagi trimming the lead to 7-4.
Starting pitcher Trent Evins (4-4) got the win throwing eight and two thirds allowing four runs, AJ Smouse (4-3) was charged with the loss allowing five runs three of them earned through six and one thirds of work.
The loss drops the WhiteWings back to the .500 mark and are currently in fourth place in the United League.
Tuesday July 9th the Wings welcome in the Alexandria Aces for a four game series with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
