THUNDER CLAIM THREE - Wichita started the week with a 5-2 comeback win over Rapid City on Tuesday night and was able to force this past Saturday's game into a shootout. The Thunder spotted the Rush a two-goal advantage before unloading five goals in the final two frames to pull out the win. On Saturday, Wichita traveled to Tulsa to face the Oilers for the third time at the BOK Center. Wichita was able to score a goal with just over a minute remaining in the third period to tie the game. The Oilers, however, pulled out the extra point as they scored in all four rounds of the shootout to take a 5-4 win.
POWER AND LIGHT- The Thunder power play has been terrific over the last three games, recording at least two goals and going 3-for-5 in back-to-back outings. Over that stretch, Wichita is 8-for-16 (50%). That has helped the overall numbers go above 20% for the first time since early November. Wichita is 45-for-214 with the man advantage (21.0%).
RISING ABOVE- Greger Hanson has been on a tear lately and propelled himself back into the scoring lead for rookies. He leads all rookies with 21 goals and 44 points. The Swedish native is second in assists (23) and is nine points ahead of the field. Kevin Young is two points off the pace in third place in scoring for blue liners with 36 points (14g, 22a).
PLAYMAKERS- Wichita had four players tally three assists in two of the three games dating back to last Sunday. Matt Summers has three helpers this past Sunday and Tuesday. Trimm recorded three assists against Denver on Sunday while Hanson performed that feat on Tuesday night against Rapid City.
300/500- Head Coach Kevin McClelland sits at 291 career wins and needs 9 more to reach 300 for his career. He will pass Gary Unger for seventh place with 293 victories. He would become the seventh coach to reach 300 CHL wins. He is also four games away from coaching in his 500th game, all of which have been in the CHL.
FIRST GOAL- Playing with the lead has proven to be important for the Thunder. When scoring first, Wichita is 16-1-2. When giving up the first goal, Wichita is 10-13-2.
DOUBLING UP- RG Flath has been on fire over the last eight games and led the team in scoring in the month of January. Flath has scored two goals in three of the last five games, has had at least a goal in four of the last six and five of the last eight contests (8g, 6a in that span). In 11 games in January, Flath recorded 16 points (9g, 7a) with four power play goals.
STREAKS- Hanson (6g, 6a), Summers (1g, 11a) and Flath (7g, 6a) are all in the middle of six-game point streaks. Matt Robinson (5g, 5a) and Neil Trimm (3g, 7a) have scored in their last five.
MARTENS FINDING STRIDE- Andrew Martens has quietly moved into seventh place on the team in scoring with six goals and 19 assists. He has recorded points in eight of the last 10 games and has more than half of his 25 points since Dec. 21st.
THUNDERBOLTS... Kevin Regan is second in minutes played (1552:58), tied with Jung and two others for third in wins (13), tied for second in shutouts (2) and is fourth in goals against average (2.40)...Jung is fifth in goals against (2.51)...Greger Hanson and Neil Trimm are tied in sixth in goals (21)...Ian Lowe is tied in third in power play goals (8) while Young is tied for eighth (6)...Wichita is second in goals scored (156)...Wichita is first in second period goals (66) and first in second period shots (541)...Wichita is second in goals scored per game (3.55) and first in goals allowed per game (2.59)...Wichita is first in shots against per game (26.00)...Wichita is 17-2-1 when leading after one...Wichita is 21-1-1 when leading after two periods...When trailing after one, Wichita is 7-9-0...When trailing after two, Wichita is 3-12-2...In 1-goal games, Wichita is 9-3-4...In 4-goal games, Wichita is 6-2-0...When scoring on the power play, Wichita is 15-6-3...
